France's ruling UMP party has opposed a French court's decision to annul a marriage between two Muslims because the wife lied about being a virgin. The Lille court's decision has also angered feminists who say it amounts to a fatwa against women's liberty. The court granted the man's request for an annulment after ruling that he had been tricked into a marriage. His partner's virginity was a determining factor in his decision to wed her, it ruled.

What do you think? Is this row fair? Was the guy tricked into the marriage or not?

She lied to him about something upon which the marriage was based. Sure that reason might seem unusual to most of us in this forum, but in the case of the couple concerned, it was obviously a big enough breach of trust to warrant an annulment.

Lies mean no trust. I can't stand to go out with a girl I don't trust, let alone marry her. I'd have to say that would be the main reason why I'd want to cancel the marriage. Virginity isn't a factor for me, but it seems like it was to this guy. And if it was one of the conditions of marriage, there's not much you can do.
