How do I get the side buttons to work in-game? I want to program one to '5', but it won't work in BF2, and works ifI just press it now..

Do you have the software that came with it installed?

When I had the software for my G7 installed I had to set some buttons to "Generic" in the settings.

Try that (or just uninstall the software if you don't particularly need it).

As Dauntless said, uninstall SetPoint and the side buttons should just map like any other key then.

If you really want to keep SetPoiont or the above doesn't work, go into the mouse settings in SetPoint and set the buttons to Windows Button 4 and 5 (it may be a bit different, I'm trying to think back over a year to when I last use a Logitech mouse )

I have SetPoint, the thumb buttons configured as browser front/back. I can put them as controls in BF2 on that setting. Only one that doesn't work is the program switcher button, I have to map that one to a key.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

The thumb buttons also automatically worked for me as browser back when I set it to "Generic"

I found this that I posted in another thread:

Right. Still won't work even though I have used SetPoint to configure the controls and asked it to detect BF2.EXE specially. I might just set it back to generic and change the controls in BF2 options..
