Ok so I have Vista Ultimate 64 bit for a while now but have been plodding along happily on my XP but I feel its time to change or so i thought...

My drives look like this.

C:Vista 64 Ultimate (500GB)            D:XP Home 32 Bit (320GB)

Problem 1, Bad RAM or cannot use 4GB in 4 slots? Well when I first tried to have 4GB RAM (4x4 slots) I got BSOD tested the RAM and got to bad sticks so I have sent them off to be RMA'd and fingers crossed the issue end there. There is just no way I am running Vista on 2GB RAM!

Problem 2, Vista will not allow me to copy files over for D drive (XP) to C drive (Vista) whilst being in Vista. I am thinking I can prob get away with it being in XP and then moving the files I want/need but I know if I don't sort this issue now it will come back and haunt me some how.
I have edited my account to give me "Full Control" on the D drive but it come up with "known error" every time.
Vista used to allow to read/modify file on XP before but not any more!

I have all the latest updates and drivers.

Any help.advise you can give would be great.

Wow only 2 issues in Vista?
Vista has a problem with 4 sticks and some memories. If you can send ramback and get 2x2gbs

EVERYTIME I heard people bad mouth vista on forums (often enough) I ask people to name a specific problems they are having with vista.

So far every single person has either not answered back, complained about person preference/being more accustomed to XP, or it was user error. Mind indulging me with the specifics of your problem (what service pack, how long ago, what happened ect...)
From other thread, hey look at that .sup posting random generic complaints again...You sound like a mac commercial.

What error is it giving you when it wont let you copy files? Both partitions are formatted NTFS?

File transfer from one partition to the other WAS working under Vista previously? Did you do anything, or did anything happen around the time it stopped working?

Have you tried/confirmed that this works from XP yet?

It wasn't exactly a random generic complaint, and certainly not a mac commercial. Stop looking for excuses to prove you were right with Vista bashers being at fault with every Vista error, due to a perfect OS.

On topic, have you assigned plenty of swap space when you installed Vista? You have large hard drives, if your trying to copy a lot of files you may not have assigned enough swap space to perform the operation.

Ram is cheap enough now adays anyways... (running 4gb on Vista x64 when I installed)

on topic:

I have an XP installed 350GB drive on my computer and I can throw files back and forth, easy

You can always take an iPod or some shit and use it as a medium between the two drives?

Vista has a fix for 4Gb RAM so make sure that is loaded before installing all memory. I have 4x1Gb ram running fine. Test the RAM with memtest before starting Vista. If it fails with 4 sticks try upping the MCH voltage by .1. What board do you have?

Both drives are in NTFS and no I ant had the chance to trying pushing the files from XP yet to Vista. As said before when pushing the files it states "unkown error" followed what what ever file it just tryd to push.

I have the hot fix for 4 sticks on RAM and tested them and two where bad so I'm hoping the problem ends there rather being a bad motherborad....

Hmmm. I suppose you have tried it will different files, to make sure its not specific to that one file or the folder it it located in...

Can't offer much, but testing in XP would at least ensure that it is not a problem with the hard drive and limit it down to something in the way Vista is handling it.

You are getting an error when copying from xp's partition to vista's while using vista.... Will vista copy files from its own partition back over to the XP one?

Ok so from XP I can puush files to vista but not the other way round, it must be some thing with Vista's permissions even tho I have "Full Control"
Yes Vista can copy/move/modfiy files on its own drive. Odd.

Do you have UAC disabled?

Well actually I ment can vista move a file from vista partition to XP partition...

In other words checking if the error only happens when going from one specific partition to the other, VS vista having an error when moving from ANY PARTITION to any OTHER partition.
Dunno what that would prove tbh, just trying to give you some of the steps I would take trouble shooting to help narrow down the problem.

And yeah, IMO disabling UAC = step one
If nothing else just to test that it isn't being a PITA again.
