MONTERREY, Mexico - A car plowed into a bike race along a highway near the U.S.-Mexico border, killing one and injuring 10 others.

The 28-year-old driver was apparently drunk and fell asleep when he crashed into the race Sunday, police investigator Jose Alfredo Rodriguez said Monday.

A photograph taken by a city official showed bicyclists and equipment being hurled high into the air by the collision.

Rodriguez said Juan Campos was charged with killing 37-year-old Alejandro Alvarez of Monterrey.

Authorities said the wreck happened 15 minutes into the 34-kilometer race Sunday along a highway between Playa Bagdad and Matamoros, across from Brownsville, Texas.

Campos said he is an American citizen living in Brownsville. The U.S. Consulate could not immediately confirm that.

"We are looking into the incident in terms of whether American citizens were involved,'' consulate spokesman Todd Huizinga said.

That's incredibly heartless of you to think that is the greatest picture ever. You may as well say the Nazi death camps were the greatest vacation spots. Someone was killed, and many injured in that pic.

The photo itself it actually pretty good, a little motion blur, but I suppose it adds to the hecticness of the situation

An impressive picture yes, to capture that happening, just a shame someone died. And wow that guy on the left is pretty lucky, just seems to have pulled over before the accident took place.

I dont think saying that picture is the greatest ever (althought it is still wrong), is anything like saying the Nazi death camps were the greatest vacation spots, at all.

My point is that the number of people killed doesn't matter. The fact someone died does. Unless you think that there's a number of fatalities which makes a pic like this turn from art into something less tasteful, I see a correlation between saying this is the greatest pic ever and calling a Nazi Death Camp a holiday spot. Both sentences to me are equally sickening. For me it's the fact a person died, which make all the difference.

I agree with you that to say the above picture is the greatest ever is wrong, however not quite as bad as saying that nazi death camps were the greatest vacation spots.

And yes, in my opinion this picture isnt as horrific as what happened on the death camps reasons being the scale of the events and the fact that the death camps were not an 'accident', I dont believe the two events are even comparable, the point you make suggests you think they are somewhat equal, which I struggle to understand.
