iTunes.
And I know I'll get flak for that, but I love it. So much. Such a simplistic program and it's easy to use.

VLC uses less resources and doesn't need codecs to play 99% of all video files.
WinAmp has better sound quality and kess bullshit settings for audio.
Media Player Classic uses less resources and is way, WAY better for HD playback.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
Windows Media Player is decent, good enough to play MP3 files. Windows Media Center (provided in 2005 releases of XP, in Vista Home Premium and Ultimate) is just an attempt from Microsoft to make a "packaged" software to play it all, but inevitably fails because the quality of some of the videos is weak, hard to select items that you want without having to use the arrow keys on your keyboard or the ones provided, and is a resource hog.
Typical Microsoft, what can I/we say? I'll have to D/L VLC soon. iTunes is good if you have an iPod, or are to lazy to rent from the local video store. Other then that, I've had luck w/ Nero's media player for movies, seems to work alright.
