When trying to install the new patch this came up, but as you can see from DXDiag I do indeed have XP.

You downloaded the wrong patch. Dload the patch for win XP.
Maybe you have another underlying problem. Remember the Daemon Tools thread? You posted this:

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. Daemon Tools runs just fine on my XP Pro and my XP Pro x64 systems...you just need to get the proper installer.
