HARTFORD, Conn. - Hartford police have released a video showing a 78-year-old man being struck and critically injured by a hit-and-run driver.

Police say they are hoping the video, captured by a camera on Park Street and enhanced by the Connecticut State Police Forensic Science Laboratory, will help lead to an arrest.

It shows Angel Torres attempting to cross the street on May 30 at about 5:45 p.m., and being struck by a car that crosses the center line. The car, an older model black or blue Honda, appeared to be chasing a tan Toyota.

Both cars continued on after the accident, making a right turn onto John Street.

That's messed up. I'd have at least followed or gotten tags... I seem to remember a bicyclist got struck by a car on an overpass. It knocked him off the overpass down onto the fn Florida Turnpike. He was hit several times thereafter and his body was scattered over a half a mile. I couldn't find a link but it is still sick.

Well there's your problem, it was some two bit criminals who were involved. Of course they wouldn't stop

Also, I watched the video. I thought old people were wise. The guy was crossing the road like a kid, If he paid more attention he wouldn't have got run over. Course I feel sorry for him, but 99.9% of the time you as a pedestrian can easily avoid getting hit by a car when crossing the road.

The actions of passers-by is not surprising if you've ever lived in a really large American city.

Step over homeless (in a couple of cases I've seen people walk by some homeless person who died on the street in New Orleans) and after a while you get the mentality that if an event doesn't strictly concern you or your friends/family just walk on by.

Yeah nobody goes out to him, strange. I saw a guy get hit by a car and went out in the street to try and see if he was ok and to make sure another car didn't hit him, seemed like the natural reaction. I'd think that anyone else here would do the same.

Seems like the person nearest to him (a woman ?) was reacting immediately, she puts her hands to her face and starts pacing like she is freaked out, then looks like she is on a cellphone.

3. people who did not observe the accident would have had no way of knowing if the man was injured, or just acting goofy, there's a large population of mentally ill people in our cities.

3. Thats a grey area I would have def noticed 2 cars going on the wrong side of the lane in a racing fashion and hear a smack noise from the drivers hitting the man.

yea.. you might want to watch that video again before indulging in obscene exaggerations. Yes I drove downtown routes for years when I worked for UPS. Flying bodies will usually impact the steady flow of traffic.

Did you watch the video? Are you serious?

Those two cars illegally crossed over a double yellow line and boxed him in ... there was no place for him to go. My guess is that they were going at a high rate of speed, came up on the car in their lane and just whipped over the double yellow line. I don't care if you are 20 years old, you are getting hit in that scenario.

I think with #1, you mean "move" ... nothing wrong with touching and comforting a person.

But, your point in #3 is actually very much true. In certain sections of the city, it is not uncommon for a drunk just to wander into the middle of the road and lie down ... it is also common for the homeless to purposefully get themselves hit by cars (they do this to sue and get a nice pension from the insurance companies). So, sympathy can sometimes be thin.

In DC someone gets hit by a train and the first thing you'll hear from someone on the platform is "Shit...hope I'm not late for work!".

Not to mention this is Hartford CT, not chicago or new york or la. People definitely had the time and reason to stop. They just didn't. I can understand the "waiting to see if it's a crazy guy or not" mentality. That happens everywhere. I am still appalled that not one person felt for a pulse or checked for choking on blood or anything.

Luckily the cars weren't going 50 or above mph. Then it would go from critical to fatal.

@ 78 years of age I doubt this guy was looking to extend his pension. The guy actually looked both ways before crossing. The two cars that came at him broke the law and went into the on coming traffic lane (double lines). The man should have probably used a cross walk but I doubt that would have stopped the two cars chasing each other neither.

I didn't say that he was doing this, I said that it happens. Thus, people become very cynical and "sympathy can sometimes be thin." That is, people don't help.

This guy clearly wasn't trying to get hit.

Fucking dumbass impatient drivers. It's a double yellow, those fuckers should not have been passing the other cars, and secondly, the car who actually struck the man should not have been tailgating so much and maybe he might actually notice things in front of and around him.

It's really pathetic. People are just so centered on themselves that they think they're the only ones important, so they put everyone else's safety at risk just so they can get somewhere quicker, save money/time, etc.

How sad. I hope they catch both those drivers and castrate them.

It's true, and strange. Once my mom and I were driving on a freeway out here in Los Angeles and it was a rainy night. Someone had spun out and was on the left shoulder with their headlights facing oncoming traffic. There wasn't any serious damage, and no one was hurt, but my mom said, "Oh we should call 911!" to which I replied, "Nah, everything looks ok, and besides, the driver or someone else probably called 911 already." Looking back I realize how terribly apathetic that was of me, but then again, I don't know if any serious consequences occurred from that. However, when it comes to people getting hurt, and actually witnessing it, it's obvious something has to be done... That phenomenon can only go so far...
