DC has sounded like shit for a long while now.
It doesn't just sound that way.

But it is probably the most liberal city in America (90+% Dem), spends more per capita in schools than anywhere else, yet has some of the worst schools in the nation; has a handgun ban but one of the highest murder rates in the country; has a huge homeless population...

Yeah...it's awesome.
I think San Francisco has them beat on liberalism, but it's a close call.

It's a give and take thing.  Dallas is a good example of mixing conservative economics with liberal social policies (for the most part).  It's why it grows so fast.  D.C. is too far out on the left wing.  Then again, there are places here in N.C. that are way too far out on the right wing (like how Durham is run by the rich elite who lord over the poor masses).

D.C. seems like a hellhole partially because of stupid things like that gun ban, and because of disenfranchisement.  D.C. should really have at least a few Representatives in the House.  Then, maybe some of that shit would start to change -- but maybe not....

Careful Turq... I have family in Tarheel country.  And if you want to talk a liberal place in NC, there is no better example than Chapel Hill.  And the town is not as small as it once was.  I would not step foot in quite a few areas of Durham without a CCW permit and a pistol.

Southwest and Northwest DC are nice, as are most of the surrounding cities/counties (esp. Montgomery Co. in MD, Fairfax, Loudoun, Arlington, and Prince William Cos., Alexandria, and Falls Church in VA), Prince Georges Co. in MD is just as bad in most areas as the worst of DC.

If you look at a crime map of DC, almost 100% of the violent crime occurs in Northeast and Southeast DC, particularly across the Anacostia River.

The schools are bad due to how the money is spent:
· The District spends $12,979 per pupil each year, ranking it third-highest among the 100 largest districts in the nation. But most of that money does not get to the classroom. D.C. schools rank first in the share of the budget spent on administration, last in spending on teachers and instruction.
Basically, successive DC administrations have used various city offices and committees as a dumping ground for political patronage with predictable results. Add in oversight by congress with no voting representation and you get a lot of people making decisions who have no vested interest in how those decisions play out.

I wonder how many of those homeless people go to the White House and look, and say to themselves "American dream, bullshit."  Sort of like some sad book or movie.

...or, put their hand out in a way that it's shaped like a gun, point it, and go "poof."

Probably the same number that go and protest Adrian Fenty's office about the homeless policies in DC...since it's the DC government that's responsible, not the White House.
