Next summer (probably) some friends and I are planning to drive all the way from Morocco to South Africa. There are these convoys of people who buy a car in North Africa, and then drive down and sell it in SA. I was wondering if anyone on the forum has ever done anything like this, and if they have any tips and pointers for what we should be doing. The whole idea is pretty vague right now, we just know we want to do it but obviously it's going to require a great deal of planning to ensure we don't all end up dead.
I'd get information from all local embassies of the countries you travelling through.
Driving THROUGH Africa?! I dont want to go to Africa.
Blackbelts are just whitebelts who have never quit.
This car, is it heavily armored and packing a machine gun?
Yeah, embassies could fill you in on places to avoid like areas with heightened rebel activities. To be honest, I wouldn't go without a bulletproof vest.Bernadictus wrote:

Most of Africa is totally harmless and most places you will actually be greeted much better than anywhere else in the world ... good travel plans is a must of course and reading up on local customs ... me and a friend had a similar trip planned in the mid 90s but had to abort when almost the entire northwest of Africa exploded in hostilities ...FlemishHCmaniac wrote:

Vaccination is the first you should check, some of them needs to be taken quite some time in advance ...
Wait behind the line ..............................................................
If it comes to a situation where a bullet proof vest is handy, I'm pretty sure I'm already fucked.
EDIT: And yes, well said Eggy. Obviously there are certain areas you really want to avoid, but it's not *that* bad.

Just avoid the Congo, though doubt you could really take a car through the Congo to begin with.
Still better to be safe than sorry.Varegg wrote:

That really isn't necessary..I've been to South Africa many times and it is by far the nicest place I've ever ever visited in my life...bear in mind I've been many places so it must be special.ghettoperson wrote:

It's not as backward as a lot of people think it is. Sure there are loads of shanty towns and the poverty rate is high but as long as you have good locks on your doors you should be perfectly fine. I'd recommend, however, that you don't pick up any hitchhikers unless they're wearing a uniform of some type. Last time I was there was during the elections in the Zulu-Natal region the Western world hyped it up to be so incredibly violent...I have one word to say to that. Bullshit. Hell I even visited a guy called Walter who had 3 wives, 21 children and a nice big marijuana farm. He was so nice that he actually offered to smoke up with us but my dad was there. P
Where exactly will you be going?
If you're going by car I'd recommend the garden route or driving around the Cape up to Durban...beautiful place.
You're missing out tbh.m3thod wrote:

Yes, but bear in mind that South Africa is a continent of its own compared to the rest of Africa. It is by far the richest country and most people are white there... It's not the real Africa...teddy..jimmy wrote:

Yeah but bear in mind he said he was going to South Africa and not anywhere else I was only referring to RS of A (Republic South of Africa)Zimmer wrote:

Talking to a guy whose visited a lot of Africa, he reckon Joburg was by far the scariest place he'd been to. It depends where you are, some places are fine others aren't.
Pschhh Joburg isn't scary...you just have to avoid the shanty towns. I wouldn't recommend going there though because it is admittedly quite ugly.ghettoperson wrote:

The Cape area, Drankensburg/Pietemaritsburg area and the Kruger area are definitely places to favour.
I'm not sure where in SA I'll go to, probably right down to Cape Town so we can do the whole thing. I'm not that worried about SA, it's more trying to avoid the slightly dodgier central countries.
O shi!! I completely misread the post! You're going to other parts as well?
Well then..you have to be more careful!
I've been to many places in Africa that are relatively peaceful but there are definitely places I'd avoid.....

Exactly that's what I was gonna tell you, before he arrives at SA he has a long way to go, but for sure he will be very happy when he finally arrives in SA, beautiful place...teddy..jimmy wrote:

I haz nø møre karma ghettoperson
Haha, the Foreign Office essentially advises you not to go to anywhere in Africa. I'll be sure to avoid Chad and Somalia though.
There's a mercenary company in Joburg, you should sign up there. Make millions and meet tons of friendly sf types...teddy..jimmy wrote:

Anyway, yeah how old are you Ghetto? I wouldn't go until I was at least 19 and could handle myself. If there's a big convoy that do it regularly then they should have a website surely? Then they could advice on what to do, what shots to take.... What gun to bring. Joking.
Get heavily tanned before you go and bring some black spray paint. Then you can blend.
I'm nearly 20, will be 21 by the time we go.jord wrote:

Question is...can you make a black man who's hung like a donkey cry like a girly?ghettoperson wrote:

I imagine a K-Bar in him will hurt like hell ...
Dude, sounds like an epic journey.
I'd love to do something like that, good luck, and don't get raped in civil warry countries.
