What a load of shit. They say you should never go to Russia? Wow.ghettoperson wrote:

Yeah I found those two. Basically, everyone disagrees on it.
If you read, they talk about "parts of". Because all those countries have some sort of hot zone. Even Russia (Chechnya etc..)
Only Chad and Somalia are total 100% no go zones

Be sure to visit Namibia. Excellent country. I was there in 2006. I'm not sure about the roads though before Namibia. But after Namibia its clear driving to South Africa.
Want to go back there, almost did in January but my teeth started bothering me.
Southern Africa is nothing like the northern part. I mean I walked around Jo'burg alone and didn't feel uncomfortable.
Good luck man, I want to live vicariously through you.

This reminds me of a book I had to read called Looking for Lovedu. You might want to read it because it isn't too long and is a journal-type book of the same journey you're planning to do. Personally, I hated the book due to its boring parts and feminist overtones, but it sounds like something you would enjoy if you're planning a trip like this. Good luck and yea, avoid the Congo.

1st. Plan your route and talk to every single embassy on your desired route.
2nd. Get all the jabs you need.
Personally I would only go down the westernly side of Africa, that way you get to go through Namibia, but more importantly you end up on the western coast of South Africa meaning Cape Town, possibly my favourite place on earth, much safer and pretty than Joburg.
Also, heard of a Brit show called "Long Way Down"? Look it up and see what they did, they drove though Africa on bikes. Just see what they did, there is a DVD with all you need to know with it.

* We advise against all travel to Chechnya, Ingushetia and Dagestan because of the security situation in the North Caucasus. This also includes the regions of Budyonnovsky, Levokumsky, Neftekumsky, Stepnovsky and Kurskoy in east and south Stavropol Krai, which border Dagestan and Chechnya. See the Terrorism and Local Travel sections of this advice for more details.
* We advise against all but essential travel to North Ossetia, Karachai-Cherkessia and Kabardino-Balkaria (including the Elbrus area) as terrorism and kidnapping in these regions remain a serious problem. See the Terrorism and Local Travel sections of this advice for more details.
* There is a general threat from terrorism. Attacks cannot be ruled out and could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers. Attacks have occurred most frequently in Moscow and in the North Caucasus.
* Around 233,300 British nationals visited Russia in 2006 (Source: Russian Federal Agency for Tourism). Most visits are trouble-free. The main types of incident for which British nationals required consular assistance in Russia in 2007 were for replacing lost or stolen passports; hospitalisations; and deaths, mainly from natural causes . You should be aware of the risks of crime. See the Crime section of this advice for more details.
* Since 2005 there has been an increase in racially motivated attacks: visitors of Asian or Afro-Caribbean descent should take extra care. See the Crime (Racially Motivated Attacks) section of this advice for more details.
I read correctly, but who would miss out on some cool terrorist action?
Oh, yes, count me in!!!!Zimmer wrote:

@ghettoperson: Most of Africa's harmless, even the eastern part. As was previously said, only Somalia and Chad are totally no-go. Darfur, too, is on that list.
If I were you, my primary consideration would be the road conditions--bad roads-->no go. So check that out. Check accommodations, too. Of course, register with your embassy in each one of the countries you are traveling to. Lastly, give yourself some leeway in your travel plans; you might want to stop by and visit some sights, meet some people, etc...So don't set yourself a rigid schedule. Oh, and make sure to carry extra gas tanks. You never know when you'll need that.
After saying all that, I'm almost sorry to say this, but make sure you have a lot of cash stored somewhere on your person or within easy reach; sometimes the locals don't accept credit cards (ransoms, help towing your car, emergency evacuation if you fall sick or are attAKed etc...) It's a pity, but it's reality. And better safe than sorry.
So, best of luck, hope this helps.
I like pie.
Yeah, I'm downloading the episodes now just to see what they did, but looking at their site they went east. I did see an episode of it when it was on TV though. If Ewan McGregor can do it without winding up dead, I reckon I can. Ideally we'd end up in Cape Town, although it'd be sweet to head to the most southerly point of Africa. So we'll probably do both.ShowMeTheMonkey wrote:

Watching the first episode, it scares me how much preparation they've put it...

I just find it funny how everyone appears to stereotypicalize Africa, and Zimmer referred to it as if South Africa didn't "belong" to the rest of Africa. (because it is, in his words 'by far the richest country')jord wrote:

That IS true! South Africa is almost completely westernised. (At least the Southern Provinces). I much prefer western cape, much nicer people of Xhosa decent rrather than Zulu. It can be said the majority of the violence in Joburg is, hate to say it, but black on black. Mostly Xhosa tribes VS Zulu. Even after these tribes have dissappeared, they are still there in spirit.
Not sure about North East Africa. Seems that's where the majority of trouble can be.
To ghettoperson:
Long Way ROUND - Going East to New York.
Long Way DOWN - Going to Cape of Good Hope (It's beautiful by the way).

That really would be an epic journey even if it was a bit dangerous. Although if its popular route than Im sure there are designated routes that are safe.
Im planning a bike ride from Vienna to Budapest next summer. One of my acquaintances (holly crap thats hard to spell) did it. Its just over 300 km when you take the bike route and apparently is fucking awesome.

No kidding. I was like holy shit lots of activity going on there. Cape Town seems like an awesome place. Though I really like Namibia. I really wanted to visit the skeleton coast and maybe take in Walvis Bay but I didn't : (ShowMeTheMonkey wrote:
