It is said that Radeon HD 4870 X2 got more score in 3DMark Vantage than GeForce GTX 280.

Radeon HD 4870 X2 based on R700 and the same with Radeon HD 3870 X2, it arranged two RV770 cores on one PCB to compose 2×256-bit and 1GB GDDR3/5. Obviously, AMD will open Radeon HD 4870 X2 design and allow AIB to decide the PCB design, core clock, video memory, cooler, etc. Then we will see kinds of non-reference Radeon HD 4870 X2 in the market.

It is reported that Radeon HD 4870 X2 can get X5500 in 3DMark Vantage while GeForce GTX 280 can just get X4800.

AMD holds another advantage that is GeForce GTX 280 is going to be released soon, so Radeon HD 4870 X2 can be further optimized and improved by upgrading the forceware according to its opponent. For now, we dont know NVIDIA will release GeForce GTX 280 GX2 or not.

In addition, Radeon HD 4870 X2 will be released 6 weeks later after Radeon HD 4850/4870 released, that is the beginning of August.

Finally ATI start getting genuinely competative again, could be a sign of things to come from AMD too.

Lets see the 280GTX in SLi benchmarks, I think that would be a more fair comparison.

I'm glad to see ATi is out of their slump. Competition FTW.

I think he is meaning it is unfair for a dual gpu card to go against a single.  But that is ATi's strategy, and if ATi can offer a dual GPU card cheaper and faster than Nvidia's single GPU, then the fact of the matter is ATi would of beaten them.  How the cards go about delivering there performance means nothing, its all about price, and if you are being beaten in that catagory, forget it.

agreed, if a card is cheaper and performs better than a more expensive card, i could care less about the number of cores it has.

well, it's from HardOCP, so I believed it.  i figured it would beat the GTX 280 before anyway, honestly.

Hmm..I just went browsing on [H]ard|OCP and couldn't find that article anywhere. Maybe I wasn't looking in the right place.

Anyways, I hope there is some truth to this claim. Competitive prices makes us all happy.

I want to see it done on 3dmark06 since almost no one has the full version of 3dmark vantage and it will also give us a better idea on how well it runs against the current cards.

As I always say, I'll wait until I see some official benchmarks before going off an article.

If those official benchmarks DO indeed prove the 4870X2 to be superior, you'll be seeing my sig change though...

Source?

The original article makes no claim about price / performance, just performance. And in that sense it is an unfair comparision.

if you've been paying attention to graphics news lately, the GTX 280 is going to be priced at around $600, and the 4870X2 will be priced around $500.

true true, I'm just saying it wasn't really a fair comparison, but you are right, if both cards are in the same price bracket and one out performs the other, I'll go with the best one.

Like was said, ATi stated they would undercut Nvidia in price every time, the figure that circulated was $500 USD as was stated, vs $650 for Nvidias competing part.

This also ties in with ATi's claim in late april that the prices of the 4 series would be about the same as the 3 series was at the time.

Well, he has a point in that winning in 3DMark doesnt always constitute better fps in games.  If it is indeed true.
