I remember warming up in a gym before a volleyball game, and watching some old lady get hit and knocked over by a volleyball one of the kids I was warming up with had hit. It was kind of a slow motion moment where everyone watched this old lady go down, and then everyone kinda cringed and turned away. I was the only one out of anyone that saw the lady get hit to help her up. I mean, of course it's everyone's first reaction to succumb to the bystander effect, but why do people so totally lose the ability to act rationally in a tense or shocking moment?

Also, I watched the video. I thought old people were wise. The guy was crossing the road like a kid, If he paid more attention he wouldn't have got run over. Course I feel sorry for him, but 99.9% of the time you as a pedestrian can easily avoid getting hit by a car when crossing the road.
Those two cars illegally crossed over a double yellow line and boxed him in ... there was no place for him to go. My guess is that they were going at a high rate of speed, came up on the car in their lane and just whipped over the double yellow line. Eyes, Ears. It's about being aware. Ok, granted, this guy is 78 or so years old. That's why you should be extra careful, not that I'm saying it's his fault cause at the end of the day it isn't. But like I said almost all of the time, a pedestrian when crossing a road, can avoid a collision with a car.

General first aid rules. I took a lifeguarding course and they said the same thing (unless of course they're face down in the water). Especially in this situation. A person may have broken their neck and touching them could either further injure them or kill them.ZombieVampire! wrote:

Blocking off the road so people couldn't hit him was the best thing they could have done.
Shitty first aid course. The first thing you do is check for breathing. If they're breathing, you ensure that they're safe from harm, even if it means moving them. People survive broken necks, but they don't survive not breathing for 10 minutes waiting for an ambulance to arrive.

I was almost hit once a few years ago crossing a crosswalk where I had the go light. The guy who almost hit me was making a right turn on a red light. Naturally I wasn't looking that way because it was behind me to my left and I shouldn't have had to.
You typically look both ways, but once you think it's safe on a side you turn your attention away from it.
