You should have waited for your stats to update. You earned Basic Knife and then you got promoted to Master Sergeant because you were not eligible for the First Sergeant promotion by that time. The stats servers are always slow on weekends. The server you were playing on when you got your Master Sergeant promotion didn't know you had Basic Knife so when you hit the 20k it promoted you to Master Sergeant.
