Alright so i have 1200 saved up for a new rig. (not looking to spend it all, of course). Here is what i have chosen so far:

Processor:  Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 Wolfdale 3.16GHz 6MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6819115036

Motherboard:  ABIT IP35 Pro LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6813127030

Ram:  Kingston 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Dual Channel Kit
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6820134046

Video Card:  EVGA 512-P3-N801-AR GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814130318

Not sure how big of a power supply i should get for these, but am i on the right track for performance? Also im not sure about the ram.

look at my rig below.  I spent about $900 on it, minus the graphics card, mouse, keyboard, and OS.

not modular, but plenty of 12V amps and quiet.

also, recommended by kyle.

It means most of the cables that you dont need can be taken out, just a plus for cable management

Modular means that the cables that aren't being used can be detached. You only "plug" in what cables you need, thus not creating as much heat, and is also easier to organize.

I'd suggest dropping to an E8400, theres hardly anything between it and the 8500 yet there is a fair price gap (atleast when I was buying there was).  I wouldnt buy a new graphics card till after june 23rd at the earliest either.

I'd get the E8400. I don't know what the price difference is where you live, but its €80 here. So the E8400 will give you 3000 MHz. and the E8500 just 166 MHz more. Well I'd save the €80 and just OC it to 3166 MHz. Just my thoughts..

do i need to buy any thermal compounds or anything? or does it come with the processor?

a thermal pad comes attacked to the stock HS, which comes with the processor.  however, it is not as good as using Arctic Silver 5, which you can pick up for around $5 or so.

Cant you stetch to say a 250GB?  Not so much because of size, but because they tend to have 16mb of cache vs 8mb in the link you posted.  It can make a difference.

and with that, ill now have the barebones for the PC and it will run fine. (besides the OS... not sure what im going to do for that) Then i have room for additional upgrades later on.

So this brings me right up to $967.11. Under 900 without tax though.

for the actual cd/dvd drive im stealing it from my terrible dell i got in my room. (used for work). so thats no problem.

Yup ^  But dude, dont buy a new machine till after the 23rd, there is new cards coming out that are poised to take us quite a bit forward, especially in your price range from ATi.  Even if you are set on the 8800GTS, it would be feasable to expect price cuts on that card after the 23rd.  If you need it now though then by all means.  Two weeks aint that long tho

If you were thinking about going with the 160GiB WD1600AAJS, why choose the $80 250GiB ST3250620NS when you can get the $70 320GiB WD3200AAKS?
