well my pc just bluescreened for a split second and reboot, then failed to get into windows stating 'Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM '

so is this hardware related? or is my windows dead?

help GREATLY appreciated

tried a repair install, got 'driver irql not less or equal' error

what shall i do with the repair console? never used it before

As Sup said, you can find that file on the Windows CD. Simply repair your windows. It will take the same amount as you installing windows but all your settings, files, etc. will be saved.

I had that error once and it was related to memory error i think. Try taking one ram stick out.

glad to hear the ram thing fixed it, but for anyone else who runs into this problem, it could be a simple registry issue. there is a way to recover from it, you can restore a previous backed up version...

i've used this many times with great success:
