With everyone talking at SSD drives as the future of hard drives, those old platter based drives aren't looking too attractive anymore. But that doesn't mean they're going down without a fight, oh no. Western Digital has announced that its hard at work on an insane 20,000 rpm hard drive. That's nearly twice as fast as the fastest hard drive that most people would ever buy for their computers.

And they're going to make it practical as well, ensuring that it'll run quietly. 10,000 rpm drives right now run like jet engines, so we can't imagine them selling a 20,000 rpm drive without some fancy technology to get it quiet. But hey, if Western Digital says they'll be silent and they actually are they might have something good on their hands.
Sounds good to me (until the price of SSD's drop).

Sweet, once the drive fails epicly I can use it as a die grinder.

WD solution to reduce the noise: http://soundproofing.org/images/headset-80.jpg

If they can reduce noise and still make it that way it doesn't break after 5 months, then this is pretty awesome news!

I'm thinking if you double the speed you're going to double the MTTF. Which seeing as it'll cost a bomb does not sound like a very safe investment.

Especially seeings it probably won't be that much faster.

Someone needs to make SCSI drives more convenient for consumers.

Ooooooo

I don't see why people complain about the noise that the raptors produce. I mean, I can never hear it over my 6 other drives and the X1900 anyway.

Put some props on it and just make it into a helicopter tbh

lol.

I have a 37GB Raptor and I can't hear mine either. If I defrag it or something it makes noise, but it's barely audible over my X1950XT @ 100%.

Yeah, well, those are X1900 series cards...
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

wouldn't that just be like a 10,000RPM x2 raid 0 setup??
If so, I already have that, probably for less than what this will cost

no, it's not like having two oxen that can pull 1000 lbs. each.  they don't combine and create more power (in this case, speed).

it's like having a single ox that can pull 2000 lbs.

ah screw it, this analogy sucks
