Not sure about the US here, but UK tariff details have been released for iPhone 3G and they are fantastic.

iPhone is coming soon for Pay & Go

Customers will soon be able to enjoy all the great features of iPhone without a monthly contract with the iPhone for Pay & Go.

Just register your interest opposite and we'll drop you a line in early July to tell you what you need to do to be one of the first to get your hands on the new 3G iPhone.
I reckon that it'll be £199 for the 8GB and £299 for the 16GB. Either way, this is fantastic as it means you won't have to crack your iPhone to work for PAYG if you are on 02 (like me!) Now, for the contracts:

Initially, you are thinking "that's expensive". But look: unlimited data on all tariffs. That is unlimited 3G data on a £30 p/ month contract. That is really quite cheap. And the even better news is that for existing iPhone user on an 02 contract - you're upgrade to iPhone 3G will be free! Overall, this is pretty fantastic. The mini jack is standard 3.5mm, there is GPS, it is thinner...available in black and white too.

Tariff info courtesy of 02 - see what you can do.

Its still not really worth it.

PAYG will get a load more people to buy it. Very clever marketing. Do the people on the expensive contracts have to option to change to a cheaper one along with the phone upgrade?

GPS, 3G? Pretty much all phones have that. Isn't it true that it can't do multimedia messaging?

Wait for the Android, that should be more interesting ^^ Don't get me wrong, I'm not just Apple bashing, improvment is great but I still think that they are holding back

Not all phones have proper GPS, and not many have 3G at all tbh...there's a third party app (free) that can do MMS. There's no other contracts I'm afraid - it's that expensive/cheap because of data transfer.

If that's the same in the US, I'll be getting the second one. 70 a month? Not bad, I can afford that with my new job...

Well, this new iPhone is certainly more price-worthy than the old one.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

yeah i think the idea is that you use email instead.

tempting, but the majority of people still text.

BUT for £5 more (£35) you 600mins and 500txts which is pretty gd IMO with all the free data and stuff.

WAT!? I use it all the time. I am not a huge texter but probably use like 60+ in a month.
How do you text so little? What do you use then to communicate with people who are not on the internet?

Well 500 texts is still shit. Especially for £35. 500 texts would last a few days.
With what I have now if I top up £30 I get unlimited (10,000) texts a month.

And I'm thinking of going for a £25 600 minutes, unlimited text contract.

I still think paying for a phone defeats the whole purpose of a contract, when you could get another one (that for the sake of turning in to a iPhone debate we'll refer to as just as good) for free.

How unlimited is "Unlimited"?

I'm paying £20 for 10GiB/month at 7.2Mbps with call and text charges comparable to most normal plans, and that's with a contract binding me for only 6 months, on any phone I want to use. I don't see why this plan is all that spectacular. I guess that with Apple standards, though, it doesn't take much to impress.

Unless I have missed something, how much (atleast in the UK) would it cost as a PAYG.  As in price per call/text/email watever.  Never been a fan of contracts I dont use the phone enough (yet) but did always want one xD.

They don't sell them (at least here) as pay as you go, none of the best phones are sold to pay as you go customers.

125 texts is more than enough for me. I tend to contact most people via MSN/Facebook/email anyway.

Any word on how long for? I doubt O2 would let me have a 3g iphone on my current contract, but they'd probably give me the first iphone (which i'd be more than happy to have)

I'm sorry, I must have missed the page that mentions all the stuff it can do that other phones can't.
