Bold type by me
The famed bean soup served in Senate restaurants is made up of dried navy beans, smoked ham hocks, onions and a million-dollar tab for the taxpayer.
That menu for financial distress could be about to change as the Senate, following the lead taken by the House more than 20 years ago, moves to privatize the restaurants, coffee shops and cafeterias located in the Capitol and Senate office buildings.
The Senate last week passed a bill authorizing Senate restaurants, now run by the Architect of the Capitol, to go private, ending months of back-and-forth between Democrats appalled by the operation's money-losing ways and other Democrats worried that restaurant workers would get thrown out like the ham bones.
The measure is expected to win easy approval in the House, where privately run restaurants and food courts run profits and draw good crowds every day of House members and employees, tourists and disaffected Senate staff.
By comparison, wrote Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., who as chairman of the Senate Rules Committee has spearheaded the privatization drive, the Senate restaurants last year cost taxpayers $1.3 million with food quality and service that is "noticeably sub par."
So, just so we are all clear; the Senate basically has a in house food service, ran by government paid employees with a menu that has had the same limited items for sale for over 20 years. The complaints range from lack of choices, over charging for services, financial mishandling and just plain shitty food.
Our health care system certainly sucks and needs reforms but why would we make it worse by giving the government total control? Does anyone really think the government does a good job managing things? Why would anyone want politics making the health decisions for them? Best line of the recent GOP debate came from Rudy: "If we institute HillaryCare, there will be no place left for Canadians to get health care."...
Threats to nationalize oil industry should be viewed through the lens of " would I want the folks managing the Senate restaurant determining how much gas costs?
And how about the fact that as they watch their own food service go broke and realize that the only way to save it is to privatize it, they argue strenuously against privatization of social security.
Universal Healthcare, Obamas plan should be viewed the the idea in mind that the very people crafting the healthcare plan are the folks managing the Senate restaurant determining how said healthcare should cost.
These same folks sit around in their thousand dollar suits and discuss breaking up Google.
Oh, and don't forget that the same folks running the senate restaurant aren't huge fans of free speech.
Nope. I just don't fucking get it, unless the underlying message is; " We can't run a cafe at a profit but we can be trusted to run the national health, the border and a sane national energy policy, trust us. "
My my. Interesting times we live in.
