The ACTA draft is a scary document. If a treaty based on its provisions were adopted, it would enable any border guard, in any treaty country, to check any electronic device for any content that they suspect infringes copyright laws. They need no proof, only suspicion.

They would be able to seize any device - laptop, iPod, DVD recorder, mobile phone, etc - and confiscate it or destroy anything on it, merely on suspicion. On the spot, no lawyers, no right of appeal, no nothing.
Great! Just what we need, border guards checking for fucking POSSIBLY stolen music. Never mind having border guards GUARD the border, oh no, they have to protect the interests of multi-million (probably billion) dollar companies. Thanks, Congress!

How the hell would a border guard know if my music is legal or not? How would he know I didn't just copy it from a CD that I legally purchased? What's stopping some guard from taking your iPod because he decided his kid needed a nice XMas present?

This is getting ridiculous. First the seizure of laptops at airports, then that Homegrown Terrorism bill, now this thing? Did everyone in the US government fall asleep during their high school US history class about the Constitution?

That's outrageous. Who the actual fuck in government thinks this is a good idea?

EDIT: Reading the article, it sounds like a bunch of corporate whores that are getting a fuckton of money for it, it won't be passed. They'd be riots if it happened. And fucking rightly.

Regardless who it is, I stopped being suprised/shocked by federal govt a long while ago, they can and will impliment whatever they like, checks and balances means nothing, particularly when there all in each others back pocket.  Alas I need a drink.

Riots?...Wishful thinking.

The world is full of lazy, armchair-revolutionaries these days who won't do a damn thing until the swat team have beaten down the door...and by then our obese, zombie-like minds and bodies won't be up to much.

We here in Europe (well Ireland specifically) are about to vote on a huge 250 page amendment to the European constitution that could have any number of huge effects on how things are done here in Europe and I don't think Ive seen one person (in Government or elsewhere) who actually really knows what is contained in the document. I'm sure we'll all be bitching and moaning and talking about riots once the treaty kicks in but by then it will be too late. The Governments of the world are talking more and more power over the lives of ordinary people and they are doing it in the name of peace, security, climate change, economy...I hate to sound like an anarchist douchebag but I'd rather see them fucking back off a little and devolve power a little instead of centralising it the way they are.

I can't say I completely disagree. It seems that slowly but surely, they're trying to give themselves more power than what they should have.

Perhaps, but I think if people started having their iPod's and so forth nicked off them every time they flew, people would be pretty damn pissed off.
