They are being critics of each other using history. In essence they are saying lets not recreate our mistakes... pretty much the exact opposite of what you are suggesting.

If McCain said that, it must be true.
And I suppose the same logic applies to Obama's claim?
Well, I was addressing the McCain part, I don't think Obama is right.  McCain wouldn't have Cheney.

Time for a history lesson.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carter_Doctrine
The Carter Doctrine was a policy proclaimed by President of the United States Jimmy Carter in his State of the Union Address on 23 January 1980, which stated that the United States would use military force if necessary to defend its national interests in the Persian Gulf region. The doctrine was a response to the 1979 invasion of Afghanistan by the Soviet Union, and was intended to deter the Soviet Union—the Cold War adversary of the United States—from seeking hegemony in the Persian Gulf. After stating that Soviet troops in Afghanistan posed "a grave threat to the free movement of Middle East oil," Carter proclaimed:

Let our position be absolutely clear: An attempt by any outside force to gain control of the Persian Gulf region will be regarded as an assault on the vital interests of the United States of America, and such an assault will be repelled by any means necessary, including military force
Carter made it policy of the United States to use force in the Middle East to go after oil. Let's give the man another Peace Prize.

You really must stop it with the factyness. It gets in the way of others' hyperbole.

I don't get it... Who ever said that Carter was an angel? We know all that, so what is this a response to?

Fuck that, who in the right mind believes that there's a difference in foreign policies between reps and dems? (other than the neo-con assholes that took it a bit too far admittedly...) No wait, come to think of it, they just raised the bar for the dems, that's all.

More than you think. Since we are talking about Carter I thought I would throw in something we rarely talk about here.

While we are at it why limit it to just Reps and Dems? The United States is not the only country that has been sticking their nose in the middle east. Why was the British so hell bent on achieving a colonial dominance in that region of the world (oil)? Prior to WWI both he British and the Russians were trying to achieve hegemony in the Middle East. I just find it funny to see this idea of war for oil suddenly dawn on people.

String'em all up.

Yeah McCain the gas tax is just the relief the American people want, just like the those dumb tax rebates. All of these are cheap short term solutions that do nothing but make people happy for a month.

FFS can we implement long term solutions that will actually solve something? The more I listen to McCain in interviews and watch his speeches the more he reinforces the fact that he is nothing but a wind bag.
