Hey guys. I've tried all the obvious things to fix this problem, it's beginning to worry me.

Specs first:

  • Intel C2D E6400 @ 2.72GHz
  • Asus P5LD2 Mobo
  • nVidia GeForce 7900GT (after-market cooling)
  • Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic

Basically my card has been idling at 48°C, when I know in the past it's been idling at say 35°C

The thing's I've tried. Compressed Air. Replacing cooler/Thermal paste. Reinstall drivers.

It's really annoying, it now starts artefacting in even low demanding apps, and gets infinitely worse in games.

Urgh, is it on its way out?

The card could very well be on the way out. 7900GTs tend to have a quite short lifespan, just as the 6800 series.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Try to put another fan on the existing fan/cooler.

Idling at 48C is not bad at all, although if it idled at 35C before it might be a sign of a problem.  If the aftermarket cooling has a fan controller on it, then try upping the fan speed.  You might be able to control it through RivaTuner as well (depending on where you plugged in the fan connector).

What's most important is your load temps.  How are those?

I guarantee you won't get the load temps with a poker game, lol.  Use ATiTool or the fur benchmark.

My 7900GT was at 90*c load a week ago. Taking the fan power cable in and out dropped it back to 45* for some strange reason

I had a problem with CPU and GPU overheating once...  It turns out that with a long-haired cat in the house, you need to clean out heat sinks more often.

Card is likely borked. 53C is nothing.

Try to update drivers, and check that the card is properly connected to the mobo, and that the gpu - screen cable connectors are not loose.

7900GTs shouldn't run at more than about 90C.
