If you had the power of a button if your hand,

Press the button, and EVERYTHING man made on earth dissapears, EXCEPT for the clothes on peoples backs, but no phones, no MP3 Players, no Laws, no buildings. All that will be left is what's left of the vegetation, people, and the knowledge they have in their head, that they must use to rebuild.

Don't press the button and the world continues to spiral into the shithole that it is.

Now I'm hoping for a serious discussion, so no BS like "Well what happens to people in high-rises when they dissapear" FYI, the people magically teleport to an empty patch of land.

Personally, I'd hide the button, go out, buy all the wilderness books I can find, memorize as much as I can, then hit the button.

Discuss.

When you press the button, all you do is make that spiral to crap happen slower.

You chose to leave the knowledge people have..which leaves all the hate, bigotry, etc... that exists already, so not much would really change other than the timeline.

It would depend on how we used our experience. It took us 650k years to get here. Millions would probably die. The world relies on technology to distribute food across the globe.

Didn't think about the hate,

But as far as laws are concerned, someones gonna start re-writing the books, and someone else is bound to interject, after some heated debate, and 100 years later, we have a better regulated law system.

I think it's safe to say billions would die.

You must consider the impact of immediate population density. We would not have the gradual population growth needed to build a sustainable society.

lol @ Senior.. I actually wrote that first but I think the number would have scared people away.

So considering the implications(Death, famine, etc) WOULD you press the button?
Why/why not?
(You're discussing the idea, but not whether it'd be ethically correct to push the button)

No.  It would make things much worse with no real hope of making things better for mankind.

No, mostly because I don't have that god complex thing going on. It is not for me to decide.

yes, even though i would certainly die. the only crop around here for miles is strawberries and whatever's still in my parents'  (3 tree) orchard. that won't sustain the millions in the central valley.

if i press that button, the population will plummet to around 1 million and be able to sustain itself. disease will be a thing of the past because there won't be the population density necessary for its spread. famine will disappear. thousands of species will be saved. the oceans will be saved. humans will be saved. hopefully they'll learn from it, but if not, somebody can find the button further down the line and push it.

pollution will be gone. dependence on fossil fuels will go away. evolution will start again for millions of species.

Hence my thought of reading survival books.

One thing I didn't think through,

How far would
"Everything man made" go.

If one were to make a WOODEN spear before pressing the button, would the spear be gone too?

Either way, that defeats the purpose on my "No Smartass" rule

I do most of my reading on my kindle. I'll have to relearn how to use one of those lookin books with all of their fancy movable type.

Gotta get someone to make the paper and the printing press first.  Then you need someone to rewrite content...since books are most certainly manmade.

You get the press I'll run it. My parents owned a print shop for years. We can rewrite history as owners of the only media outlet. The power would be unfathomable.

Problem is, so do 100,000 other people(Own/run print shops)

So having that type of ability seems good at first, but when you think about it, it isn't THAT good.

I guess it all depends on who ends up dying, if all/most the print shop poeple die, then yes, you;d make a killing.

I was just emphasizing the power behind the press when you take away the other outlets. We've had President's win elections after having a book written about them.

Oic.

But I'm also bringing into consideration something that others may not've had experience with.

In a way, we're both right, you made a point, but I added another variable that some may not think of.

All in all, the discussion wins.

in a sense I'm glad that most weapons are made by precise actions (like machinery) or else I believe there could be a arms race of some sort...just one small example
