Ireland has spoken...now we wait with baited breath to see what exactly it has said! Counting began about half an hour ago on tallies from the 43 voting constituencies and results should start coming in from mid morning. One result just announced on TV3 news showed 109 No votes to 108 Yes, this could be an omen for a very tight run-in.

108 and counting! I honestly thought the sheep would return a resounding Yes vote (by sheep I mean the people who vote Yes just because the Politicians said they had to and did not actually read the treaty information) but we could have a battle on our hands.

I hope Ireland votes yes... I want my future in the hands of politicians I don't know and who I can't vote in or out office but who instead put themselves in office (seems like Russia). I want overspending and fraud, combined with the most stupid rules.

Well, well, well it looks like our Government's gamble of dedicating only 21 days to their Yes campaign might not pay off.

Our Taoiseach's home constituency may apparently be the only constituency to return a Yes vote! This referendum, if does in fact turn out to be a No vote, will be a resounding failure for our new Taoiseach.

I think the people of Europe who were never given the option to exercise their democratic right on this owe us a pint.

Although I couldn't vote, (I hold an UK and Irish passport but I am a uk citizens) I am extremely proud of the people of Ireland for shooting this down. Although they will make Berty EU prime minister and re do the vote in a year or so and the sheep will truly come out then. There is an agenda bigger than one nation going on. They will get it through in some way. Mark my words.

Jose Manuel Barroso has just spoken. He says that the remaining European members have to continue with their ratification processes and that all member nations have to work together to address the issues raised by the Irish no vote.

...but I thought the world was supposed to end, no?

<3 the Irish. So, how long till they rephrase a few things and try to get us to accept it again? BTW did the rest of Europe actually get to vote on it? Because I never heard anything about it until Ireland were the last ones to be able to stop it.

Just seen a shinner on the TV talking about how Ireland can get more concessions now. More commissioners and more representation in the EU. I think they are confused. The people voted no because they see the centralisation of power to Brussels as an erosion of Irish sovereignty and wanted to halt the growth of the all encompassing super state, militarily and economically. It seams the No camp Sinn Fein are using it gain more power as apposed to halting said super state. It will pass eventually.

France and the Netherlands voted no to a previous incarnation of the same treaty and their Governments went ahead and accepted the 'amended' version of the treaty anyway, without a referendum...democracy!?

Ireland have effectively stopped it in its tracks for now.

Meh, if the Irish have more power in the EU that's only a good thing for everyone else. They'll veto everything and then maybe the EU will leave us alone.

WTF is a Lisbon Referendum, does it have anything to do with girl on girl action like the name implies?

That was the lesbian treaty, this is the Lisbon treaty. The Lisbon treaty was a proposed amendment to the EU constitution, and hence the constitutions of the member states, put to referendum amongst the Irish people as we the Irish people can only amend our own constitution by referendum. Most other countries ratified the treaty, which requires the acceptance of all 27 member states, at parliamentary level. Our no vote today pretty much puts the tin hat on what was potentially the blueprint for a militarily and economically unified 'United States of Europe'.

Why would the Irish want to downgrade their existance (and take on the debt) by being part of a European Military?  Ireland is a peaceful Island with no need for a military, if Ireland was ever fucked with the US would instantly go ape shit and fight by its side.

Well, unless it was England that invaded because they are way cooler than the Irish will ever be.

Well the emphasis on military development and spending was one of the main arguments against a Yes vote. One would imagine the high numbers of Irish in America would secure some sort of assistance in the face of any kind of attack or invasion but I don't think we're on anyone's shitlist at the moment anyway.

Hell, potatoes, lucky charms, and Guinness make up 70% of my diet.  I think Ireland is pretty safe in this world.

The rejection stops the EU from implementing its new constitution and forces the union to reconsider whether it can pass any expansion of the multinational government in a way that achieves unanimity. It would seem that the history of the various peoples of Europe would argue against the abandonment of national sovereignty towards which the EU process is clearly heading. The Balkans have moved in the opposite direction over the last twenty years, as have the Czechs and Slovaks. People want self-determination, not excessively bloated bureaucracies even farther out of their control. The EU experiment as federal government seems destined for failure.

Good.

I wonder if the Amero and North American union will go the same way? Should be easier with only 3 countries in it. The Mexicans will jump at the chance.
The African union and the soon to be Asian Union coupled with the EU and NAU takes us too close to a totalitarian one world government within the next 100 years.
