I've got to do it this September for a week. I'm always really anxious about new things and I'm quite scared that I won't know what to say to customers that have out of the ordinary questions.

I don't know where I want to do it at yet either because most of my more specialised areas are out of work experience range (Psychology, accounting). I'm thinking about working in a small computer shop sitting in the back fixing shit and hermitting from the customers.

Time for some escapism and red bull to calm the nerves.

I can see it being helpful to learn the ropes of business and encourage teenagers to get out of the house and get a job, taste of the real world etc etc.

I'm just scared. I dunno why but new things always get me scared. Ask timmahh, I was actually scared of catching the bus for the first time because I didn't know the process of paying driver > getting ticket > getting off bus at my stop. It's always irrational and goes away when I actually know what I'm doing though.

If they didn't expect you to be nervy and clueless in work experience, then they're doing it wrong.

You'll probably get patronisingly easy tasks to do, and feel underappreciated and bored within a day or two

Bullshit you can't do accounting.....

Heaps of kids at my school did that..... even though they didnt actually do that much, they learnt the gist of how it works.....
I'd say try and find an environment where you want to work in the future. If you want to work in an office, try and find one, even though you'll be filing all day.

work experience was easy. but take it from me, don't waste it on something stupid like i did. one of my friends got an apprenticeship out of his so its something you should take pretty serious if you want to do a trade or something.

I went to a law firm for my work experience. My only suggestion would be FOR THE LOVE OF HOLY GOD! DO NOT GO TO A LAW FIRM FOR WORK EXPERIENCE!

One thing you must remember is that no matter what you choose there is no way you can actually do anything - not for the more "professional" jobs anyway. Ergo if you were planning for work experience to enlighten you as to whether you want to be an accountant or a lawyer or a telemarketing fuck-head or whatever; forget about it. Seeing as you can't really become involved you can't really know what is involved in the job, hence work experience is more aptly named "hang around someone's place of work until you get to go home".
That's not to say it's useless, it's just to say it doesn't deliver what it promises.

Go somewhere fun.

Nervous about talking to customers? Just do what I do if someone asks me something that I have no fucking clue about: "I'm sorry, I'm not sure about that. If you ask at reception on your way out, they'll know the answer"

If you don't want to deal with customers work in a warehouse. At least you get some work out in there.

Where do you suggest? I just figured work experience would be exactly like having the job just without being paid, therefore couldn't get something higher up.

Yeah true. That made it sound a bit easier, thanks.

Yeah, pretty much. Keeps me awake but doesn't make me hyper or anything. Red bull are my cigarettes

Sounds alright actually. But the closet warehouse is miles away and it's difficult traveling there without a car :\

Thanks for the encouragement btw guys.

I went to work at the Herald Sun for the week. .

1 Day I went to the MCG and helped take photos with AFL captains.
Another day I went to the flower and garden show, which was nice.
Another day I went around with a journalist and interviewed some guy.
Then I just bludged another day in the IT department.
And the last day I listened to music with the music reviewer guy and gave my opinion.

Was a good week for me.

lol, not even close. Depending on where you go, you either sit around doing nothing (watching others work) or get coffee, photocopy shit for the person you're 'working' for.

Some places people at my school went to.
Dentist.
Vet
Law firm
Accounting firm
Local council
Restaurant
Hospital
Insurance firm
TV station (he even got to do a short segment they broadcast)
Newspaper journalist
etc etc.

You need no qualifications, and depending on the place you go, you may even get paid. One of my friends made $800 for work experience week.
