Reynolds had been sent to death row only 30 days ago for the rape and murder of a pregnant woman. Messick said the average stay on death row is 17-and-a-half years before execution.
It seems to me that a case could be made that it is a more cruel punishment to house the " dead men walking " for so long, getting them used to a routine, in some cases educating them, allowing them to marry and then one day killing them.

And like most problems involving the government bags of tax money is poised to be thrown at a new state of the art facility, but wait...of course the budget was off by 80%.
SACRAMENTO -- Ground has not yet been broken on a new death row proposed at San Quentin State Prison, but the projected cost of the project has soared by nearly 80% for a compound that could be full only three years after it opens, according to a critical audit released Tuesday. "I think this report is a bombshell," said Assemblyman Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael), who represents the area and requested the audit. "We have known for some time" that the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation "lowballed the numbers on this project.

" . . . They simply want to build a massive monolith to house all our condemned inmates on the most expensive piece of real estate in Northern California," he said.

They have to low ball the numbers. Because if the people understood all the levels of corruption and the real cost of state projects they would never get approved. How many prison guards will be hired with pensions equal to 90% of their before-retired pay?

The numbers incarcerated in the U.S. is sickening. Drugs should be decriminalized to a large extend and the only amnesty being discussed should be an amnesty program for the million or so in prison for minor crimes and drug dealing.

But as for the killers and child molesters why the fuck build a new building?
Kill them all. Kill them now.

And this, my friends, is part of why I'm against the death penalty.  Sure, some people really deserve it, but it's just too expensive in its current form.

I've never quite figured out why it takes so long to kill people. Surely you could just walk someone into a room, strap them down, give them the injection and take the body away. You could do hundreds of them a day. Hell you could even borrow the Nazi's techniques if you were really in a hurry. Taking 17 years to kill someone suggests there's a hell of a backlog.

Other states need to take a leaf out of Texas's book. Granted it's still a bit ridiculous here, but at least we actually manage to kill people when we say we're going to.

The appeals process is very convoluted.

Because it's ran by liberals.

Well, so long as they spend that time regretting the crime they committed - but that still is a much longer time than I thought it would be.

I disagree with you on the death penalty bit, but the comments about reducing the numbers of US prisoners by lowering penalties for non-violent offenders is absolutely right. It's going to be crippling to the US economy in the long run.

It's good to know that at least some murderers and child molesters spare a thought to their country and remove their burden on the state, once and for all .

Correction: it's run by lawyers.  This isn't about liberalism -- it's about profit.

Over two million Americans are incarcerated in the prison system of the USA. Ever heard "Prison Song - System of a Down"? Good song, raises questions. Download it off limewire and listen ATG, even if it isn't your thing. Alternatively, google search the lyrics.

Humm, i dont think that drugs should be legalized or anything, going to jail for selling this shit to kids and such is fine. They should review petty crimes that normally give out prison sentence...like 1 years for this and that...and remove the sentence and replace it with a fine. A big ass fine that is.

And for the kill em all kill em now part....im with you 100% on that.
