I was told Singapore is the cleanest city in the world. And this is because if you are caught littering, they whack you with bamboo a few times (Which i hear is painful like no other)

Now i was thinking, being in high school, kids and my friends go out to places to eat and 90% fo them ALWAYS leave there shit. Or for example if we are walking through a neighborhood they will throw there shit right into someones bushes. WTF.

I find it pretty embarrassing when my friends litter and throw there shit around, so I came to think; We should have something similar. I mean come on what is a 20 dollar ticket that mommys gunna pay when they get home?

Or i know all these kids who steal shit. And if they get caught what happens? They have to put it back and the cops give them a free ride home?? Sweet. Free rides!

Everybody I knew who got caught shoplifting was actually prosecuted. 

Littering bothers me because it's just rude, but there are better ways to encourage using a garbage can.

Just put up more garbage cans. I'm certain people would gladly throw their stuff away in a trash can if they weren't scattered every few blocks.

On a side note, recycling bins need to be A LOT more specific. I have no idea if a bin is for papers or plastics or glass or whatever unless it's clearly labeled. And again, if there were more recycling bins (WITH labels) I'd be more eager to recycle a bottle of coke instead of just ditching it in the nearest garbage can.

Switzerland owns at that. We have a great recycling system (most people do it, and it's easy) and we have garbage bins every 10-20m in cities.

When I was a kid, my dad worked for a Swiss company and would travel there a couple of times a year. To this day, he still talks about how clean the country is.

You greatly overestimate some people in this world.  I know people who purposely litter near a garbage can.  I have seen all sorts of people do crap like that.

I read in a travel magazine that you could drop your strudel (apple tart) on the floor and eat it from there. Whilst I will not agree entirely with this statement (unless it somehow landed on a plate, or was in a plastic bag), I will vouch for daring to walk around barefoot (something I would never do in London)

Yes. It is still illegal there...I meant here.

Littering. First offence would be a fine. The 2nd time would be a CWO. Correction Work Order, where you would be summoned, given a broom and clean a specified area in the city.

Stealing on the other hand is prosecution.

For 1st offence irregardless of age, a free ride to the station, where someone would have to bail you out then come over again for a warning. Restricted to thefts of certain value.

An higher value or repeat offenders would be taken to court for trial.

PS: no amount of garbage cans placed as strategically as possible can make a country clean if its people take no responsibility in its cleanliness. Clean countries are a result of education and a sense of pride for the nation...not the no. of garbage bins.

The last caning exercise conducted on an American that made headlines in Singapore was the Michael Fay incident where he was caught for vandalising.
He was given 4 strokes of the cane dropped from the original 6 he was initially sentenced to, after the plea made by GWB Snr.

I wonder how Michael is rite now??

That would teach him not to mess around in other's back yard.

We used to have garbage bins on train station platforms, as most people would eat, read the newspaper, smoke, and throw away old tickets.

After the world trade centre attacks, it was thought that these provide terrorist opportunities by placing a bomb into a bin, boarding a train, and detonating the device while they are safely away and un-traceable. Depending on the device it could kill\injure hundreds as they are on the platform.

While I agree that it was a good move in theory, it's made all train stations much more polluted as a consequence of no garbage bins.

I have witnessed many such caning exercises. Boy, do they hurt.....

Maximum caning is 24 strokes per person. More would have adverse effects to ones reproductive system. Only males are caned.

Same goes here. No more bins in the train platforms and  bus stations as a result of the terrorism prevention practices. But since we have a no smoking, no eating and drinking rules in public transportation , practically we dont need bins there at all.

But this is only possible as we are a small country. I dont think I can manage long haul trips without anything to smoke/drink/munch on...except maybe during the Muslim fasting months.

Last time I was in court someone was busted for littering.  The fine was $1000, which the judge lowered to "the minimum" of $500.  Not exactly a $20 ticket.

99% of the time I've seen someone get caught stealing in a store, the cops are called and the people caught are charged with a crime.  This happened to 3 of my friends in high school.  No free rides home from cops.

I would say this - your friends sound like they are A) victims of poor (or perhaps non-existant) parenting; and B) punk-ass kids with a sense of entitlement and no respect for anyone.

As far as the littering, I would ask them this: Do you shit where you sleep?

For the kleptos, I would say: Are you too fucking cheap to buy something?

On thier butts. Leaves a parmenant scar from the tearing. Too much it was belived to kill nerves.
So the Health Sciences authority limits the no. one can receive.
