I need to retrieve an old file I didn't think I'd need anymore.  Turns out, I desperately need it now.

What software is free (or even software I can buy) will retrieve deleted files?  I need the best software.

The file was deleted over a year ago.  Still, I want to try and retrieve it.

If it was a year ago and you frequently use the computer, it's more then likely long gone.

That's what I was thinking, but I just want to have a shred of hope.

There is software out there, which will read the 1's and 0's from your disc and pick up on how strong the magnetized number actually is. If it is a strong 0 then it can calculate how many times that zero has been written. And from this re-build any deleted information, or data that has been re-written. Up to over 1000 different combinations.

The software however is under the sole use of Government anti-computer crime authorities. Which is why deleting all your hacker programs and child porn is never enough, the criminal has to nuke their hard drive in a microwave to be truly safe.

Unless you have some contacts in that area I'm afraid your out of luck.

The problem with restore software is that it uses the information from the Recycler data from windows, which only contains fragments. And after a year or so, the condition of the already fragmented file is deteriorated or maybe even gone depending on how windows handles them.

What were you trying to get anyway?

Glary Utilities. It's free, and has a file undelete function. Try it.
