Today we got a cheap coal-grill, and I thought I'd try it out. Well, the damn thing won't do anything but burn for five minutes, and then fade out.

Anyone got any tips for lighting one of these?

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. charcoal in a heap, then either;

Squirt lighter fluid around and on it all, or place firelighters in the middle of the charcoal.

are you making a pyramid? If not you need to stack the coals in a pyramid shape and light from the bottom, also make sure you have the air sources open..

It sounds like you're not letting the lighter fluid set in before you light it? In any case the coals aren't being lit, do you see any coals start to turn gray?

Make sure the coal level is even. Turn the grill away from strong wind but not too much to where the fire receives little oxygen. Use computer/notebook paper to start it off or a little lighter fluid if you feel impatient.

I never use lighter fluid, just use a good amount of paper to get it started.

Solution: get a bag of coal that in which you can set the back on fire. So much easier than lighter fluid etc because you can even light the bags if there is a lot of wind (due to bag creases)

Use some lighter fluid on charcoal briquets. You might also want to plant some c4 in it. Perhaps saying "FIRE IN THE HOLE" prior to dropping a hand grenade in it would surely do the trick.
