So, I'm on my old-ass P4, since years back. It's age is starting to show really badly, it's lost ~1/3 of it's score in 3DMark, and I've had to go from 4.2 through 4.0 to 3.8GHz. It's running hotter than ever, reaching 75+ under load, and that's with a damn Gemin!

I've got enough cash for an E2180 right now, and that would be a hooge upgrade for me, and it would suit me just fine. However, I've read excellent reviews on the E7200, which is just a tad better in every field. The E7200 costs twice as much as the E2180, and I'm not quite sure it's worth the price and wait. The stock speed doesn't matter to me, as I overclock. The 2180 has a multi of 10 and the 7200 of 9.5, so they're quite equal there.

Thoughts?
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I voted E2180. As you already stated its cheaper and its tested. Works well and you can find a lot of OCes with it on forums so you can get the max out of it.

Low budget 45 nm - Intel E7200 overclocking report
might help make up your mind...

Conclusion

The E7200 processor is a more than a decent overclocker. Even with the boxed cooler and a minimal voltage raise I was able to add more then 50% clock speed. 4 Ghz everyday stable with the boxed cooler is surely possible. You just need memory and a board that can handle just over 400 Mhz FSB. But most boards with some overclocking options can handle this. I also tested this CPU with the Asus P5K (about 85 euro) and that worked flawlessly.

But if you want to overclock the chip higher the motherboard could be the limiting factor. To reach 5 Ghz you already need more then 525 Mhz front side bus. This nowadays isn't that difficult anymore, but it's more difficult to find a board that can do that. Our Asus Commando priced at +/- 125 euro had no problems with that.

With a price tag of 115 euro the Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 surely is worth considering for those who are on a budget, but still want to do some overclocking.

I don't think you will be able to OC the E7200 to full potential since your mobo isn't good enough, dunno about the ram you have.

I have a pencil-modded GA-P35-DS3, a Gemin II and RAM that does well over a GHz. FSB550 wouldn't be a problem.

It's just my CPU that's sucky.

So no vdrop or minimal drop? Btw is there a bios flash you can do with your mobo to use a BIOS that was not meant for your mobo but would work better than default one?

I'm pretty sure the p35 has vdrop.

Well he said he modded it. I don't know much about modding mobos but i presume he put graphite on a chip named...something (3 letters i believe)

Yup, I've got minimal to no vdrop/vdroop. And no, there isn't any special BIOS, like for the X38. This one does enough, though.

Moar money = better.
Bide your time until you got enough cash for that E7200, unless your P4 bursts, since you probably couldn't go 1 week without a computer

You need to apply graphite carefully, too much of it can damage the mobo. Apply by steps. Little of graphite at first.

In general, yes, but the only difference is that the 7200 is 45nm and has 1MB more L2.

Killing a CPU is quite impossible if you even slightly know what you do, and freezer certainly does. At least that they start threading down in such low temps nowadays.

I say get the E2180. You know what you're doing so you can maximise its potential. The other one seems to expensive if it's double the price and it's not even released yet. Just get the E2. It'll do you good.

What's your video card saying? You still using the 7600GT?
