I dont doubt that it works. The main question is how much fuel could it produce if you ramped up production to its highest level. I am not sure if it would meet demand. Still its good news. A bit like this story I guess.
At least petrol heads have some hope for the future. And this way we dont have to feel guilty about using fossil fuels.

You people needs to stfu about what gas prices are in your neighborhood and contribute to the actual OP.
I hope this works. We need shit like this to happen so we can get our fucking economy back in order.

Petrol costs are pretty much OT. I doubt this method will produce sufficient amounts of fuel.
Did a little search on scalability as this is pretty good news. It's also carbon neutral so no more global warming whining. Anyway scalability so far:
Time for optimalisation. Poo you bacteria's, POO! Interesting start though! However, to substitute America’s weekly oil consumption of 143 million barrels, you would need a facility that covered about 205 square miles, an area roughly the size of Chicago.
That is the main problem: although LS9 can produce its bug fuel in laboratory beakers, it has no idea whether it will be able produce the same results on a nationwide or even global scale.
He lives in the US and you live in the UK. I doubt the price will change.God Save the Queen wrote:

maybe we wont need to pay $4:20 a gallon anymore?
US is so much cheaper compared to the UK. £1.20 p/ petrol litre here!
I live in NJ and I pay in the $3.95-$4.10 per gallon range. Usually I pay around $4 even.

kool, what cant we genetically alter bugs to poo out Ion drives so we can fly in space
$8.7 per gallon here
You guys are taxed to fuck though. Something like 70p ($1.40) of that is tax Go tell brown to fuck off!kylef wrote:

Freakin sweet!
208 square miles is not a lot considering how much fuel you'd get out of it. It'd also allow for an element of decentralisation - putting production close to the source of usage, would reduce potential disruption of supply routes, and though OPEC are bound to get their knickers in a twist (and buy it out/shoot someone in the process), at least the automobile industry won't have to change much.
But besides OPEC, I do see one problem. How much space will need to be set aside to grow material to fuel the production process?

Bacteria are neither.mr.hrundi wrote:
If I got that right, it uses wood or plants to produce oil. Not long then till everyone will complain about extremely rising food-prices.
I wouldn't recommend this idea. Bacteria are without doubt the most unpredictable thing you could work with.
The paradox is only a conflict between reality and your feeling what reality ought to be.
