K, so i know its The Sun, but i saw it on their front page at the cornershop...

So, here we go...

The Sun wrote:

The idea is a central plank of Sarkozy’s plans for his EU presidency. He favours using British aircraft carriers because France’s single similar ship, the Charles de Gaulle, is decrepit and often in dry dock.

And he does not want to shell out the £2billion it would cost to build another one.

So anyways, what do you think about a new EU Navy? Personally i'd like the idea of one big EU Navy rather than lots of little navies is that a word?

Anywho, what do you say?

Terrible idea. I'm all in favour of scrapping the EU all together.

Everyone knows it actually stands for nothing... it uses the three letters S O S because of their simplicity. Man I would hate to eat shit on shingle though.

The EU actually has quite a beefy navy...8 aircraft carriers is nothing to be sneezed at.

*looks down the list*

Iran has an aircraft carrier???

I know. I was there yesterday. News International headquarters in Wapping. There's a massive painting of Murdoch in the reception.

It was there that I read the article on the front page of the Sun. Ultimately I think it's a good idea. We should be moving more towards a united European military and shifting away from NATO.

4 belonging to Britain. With 2 more shiny new ones under construction. This is what I have a problem with (our navy is probably better than the rest of Europe combined (and currently undergoing massive levels of investment (2 new carriers and the new type 45 destroyers)) and so contributions to this EU navy might prove a little one sided). But perhaps military contributions on this sort of level could entitle the UK for a bit of a rebate on the money we pay into the EU - or rather a bigger one than the one we already get and maybe, since Sarkozy seems so keen on the idea and is about to become EU president, could be helpful in renegotiations on the CAP.

Ark Royal and Illustrious will be retired and then the brand new carriers will be introduced...both are 3 times larger as their predecessors.

Don't count on it.  "Each according to their ability; each according to their need."  Welcome to reality.  The UK is now nothing more than a state in the Country of the "European Union."

Your forgetting that 2 aircraft carriers are replacing THREE of our old ones.

One sided? Belgium would gladly supply you with its massive naval force consisting of 2 old frigates, 6 decrepit mine sweepers, 5 ancient logistics ships, 1 rusty river patrol boat and 1 shiny white sailing boat to function as torpedo firing practice targets!
So I'd hardly call it a one sided deal...

This seems to show the Fleet Carriers by country: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ai … by_country

Problem is, its not showing the other types of Aircraft capable ships and the large weight(and therefore range, strike capability, strike packages, etc) or the ships.

This is simply because the French are unwilling to spend money on defence so instead they attempt to hijack what little new money that the British government are spending, as stated before we are replacing the 3 smaller carriers with these 2 new "super" carriers and the type 45 has now slipped from the apparently originally planned 10 vessels to just 6. It really irks me that the government continues to commit our forces to more and more widespread commitments but at the same time continues to cut back on spending and planned upgrades. Our navy was the best in the world 60 or so years ago and has been reduced to token force, and while I accept that it had to reduced in size and cost it is just going too far, and the same can be said of all of Britain's armed forces.

You guys have still got a pretty good navy.

TBH, if the french and others want UK carriers for an EU navy, they should front up with a lot of cash.
