I was checking out MSN's snazzy 3-D satellite imagery 'Live Maps' website just there. I was taking a gander at various major world cities, one of which was San Francisco. I don't know why but looking at the Transamerica Pyramid and Lombard St. and all them crazy hills I got to thinking:

- Hurricane Katrina, a natural disaster, destroyed New Orleans and humbled a major world power.
- San Francisco sits atop a major geological faultline.
- Is San Francisco destined to be New Orleans Mark II?

All those shiny classy buildings and all that infrastructure: why build it there? Was that not the error with New Orleans? Building a city in a bowl below sea level? Why would you build a major city on a quakeline? If a major earthquake hit San Fran what do you think the repercussions would be and do you think San Fran would survive it?

Most of San Francisco was built in the mid to late 1800's, during the Gold Rush. They really didn't know much about earthquakes back then, even when they hit. Now, it's not like they can just move the city.

Hopefully they've learned from that. I know they reinforced buildings and do a lot of other preventative measures, but there's always a chance of "the big one" coming.

i don't know why the built a city right there. maybe because of the huge bay and the harbor etc.

had been to san francisco myself a few years ago and i have to say its a pretty cool city

The problem is the only way to properly earthquake prove buildings is to build them that way (ask the Japanese).

You cant build a brick house in California it would fall apart from an Earthquake. Now you cant build a wooden house or it will be blown to bits. Sucks for California, but they can afford damages.

Yup. New Orleans was founded even earlier. At the time, it was just a swampy area. It didn't start to sink below sea level until after decades of development weighted the area down.

New Orleans was founded as a major sea port. They call the Port of New Orleans America's silk road for a reason (5th largest in the nation). Abandoning NO would have major financial implications in the US. Something people seem to forget when they say abandon the city.

Here in Florida we have building codes. There are Hurricane standards that need to be adhered to in new construction. I'm not sure about new construction in CA.

Actually Nah'linz is SF MKII, in 1903 SF was destroyed by a fire. They rebuilt and so can NO.

Well whatever happens, rest assured they will be begging for the military (that they loath) to vcome in and help, since I am pretty sure all of those liberal make love not war fuckers, will be looting, and killing, and raping each other, ya know, like New Oeleans after Katrina.

Another observation.................the midwest is getting flooded, levies breaking all over the place, yet it has not been made a race issue, nor are people lining up for a decade of free housing and money............Go figure.

Unfortunately the city gave the whole state a bad rap. I was in LA after the storm. There were people who refused to take government assistance. Some sort of Southern Pride thing was going on. Entire streets working together on one house and then moving to the next. It was reminiscent of how New York pulled together after the attacks. Working literally with buckets in support of each other.
