I looked on Wikipedia at this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_In … E_Chipsets

It looks like I probably can't use that E4700 that I wanted for whatever reason.

I also have seen from various google searches that this chipset doesn't even support dual-cores.  But then that Wikipedia article tells me that it supports the Pentium D

So I looked at the Pentium D article and found this in it about the Smithfields:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentium_D#Smithfield

"The 915- and 925-series chipsets did not work at all with the Smithfields, as they did not support more than one core (to prevent motherboard manufacturers from using them for Xeon branded motherboards, as it happened with the 875P chipset)."

It says nothing about Presleys.

So what can I actually put in this thing that is faster than the 3.2GHz 1MB Hyper-threaded Pentium 4 in it?

A 3.6GHz 2MB Hyper-threaded Pentium 4.

i915 sucks. It even underperforms badly with Prescott2M CPUs. I had one for several years, and my god, those years sucked.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I don't suppose you actually have that processor sitting on a shelf somewhere?

I saw this also: http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/mainboards … 54414.html

So I have support for Cedar Mill(65nm) processors at least.  This one is 90nm.

Nope, but I've got my old P4. I've gotten it up to 3.6 on a 915G. You could have it for $20 shipped (Unless shipping is more than $20). It's the 2MB version, though.

And I wouldn't look to upgrade anything in that old can. You're better off getting a new CPU and mobo all togheter. Could probably get a decent Pentium Dual Core and G31 mobo for $120.

That's $100, and that CPU can be oc'd way up. It's just to get a better CPU when it starts feeling slow.

It's a Dell, which means no overclocking.

It's a GX280

I can still use more RAM though as you know: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6820134181

I had the wrong type before because Crucial wanted to sell me DDR2 533(evidently they don't make DDR2 400 or something) so that's what they recommended so I would've had RAM that wouldn't run at it's intended clock and I would have slightly higher timings for no reason.

Note that I included a mobo. That mobo does overclocking. That $100 mobo/CPU will blast your P4 out of the water, and at least equal it on stock speeds. With that Celeron at 3+GHz, it's at least twice as fast as your P4. Get some DDR800 with that. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6820227139), and you won't regret it.
