Which is a better buy? GPU

A friend was asking me via MSN which would be a better card to get, a 8800GTX (768) or a 9800 (512) ?

He'll be running an E6600 with a striker extreme Mobo http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3& … odelmenu=1

There's a marginal difference in price (think the 8800 is actually slightly cheaper) but it's only a few £'s.

Find that out.

Also, tell him to be patient, and wait for the new ATI cards to arrive. With them, there will come price drops in all fields of the GPU market. If the performance rumours are true, he could get a lot more card for his cash in a couple of weeks.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. Hi there it was me that was asking, Its not the price im concerned about , Just unsure which would be the better card.

The new cards are over 400 so im not sure that cards will drop that much but ill keep an eye on the price market.

Is there any cards you would recommend for me

nvidia's new releases are expensive but the ATi releases should be much more reasonable, I'd probably recommend either 4850 or more likely 4870

That is what I would do too. Those ati cards look sweet. I have an evga 9800 gtx. I stepped up from the 8800 gt for like 50 bucks and it was worth it. Its a great card but compared to the 8800 gtx its just slightly better. So if you have to get one now I would personally get whichever one is cheaper. But you should really wait for those ati cards it shouldn't be too much longer on them.

Why don't you just overclock a 4850?

That ''new'' 9800 is essentially an overclocked 9800GTX (though it is 55nm, power savings where sacraficed for clock speed increase) and there charging you more for it. Get a 4850 with an aftermarket cooler and clock the hell out of it. Or like me go for a 4870 for $50 more. I don't really see the 9800GTX+ going for ONLY $30 more than the old one :\.
