News time BF2s!

Great news (4 series price) just got better- backwards compatibility with older HD series!

One of our readers has found an interesting post on the Forumdeluxx.de website which shows two ATI Radeon HD 4850 cards paired up with a Radeon HD 3870 DDR4 card in CrossFireX.

Even the user that wrote the post, didn't expect it to work, but it apparently it does and without any problem. The mentioned trio in CrossFireX scores 14,180 marks in 3DMark06. Before sticking in the HD 3870 card, the system scored 12,300 marks under Windows Vista 64-bit.

It is a nice boost when you consider that we are probably talking about the first tests of this kind, and we are sure that the red team will do some more optimizations before the HD 4850 hits the store shelves.

I remember reading stuff about this a few months ago, and how in theory it could work (and obviously in now in practise). It does give ATi another punch into Nvidia. However, that success is a bit limited in that most people in that budget went with 8800GT's so the appeal is limited in that respect.

Although 3870x2 owners (like that failure gooners) do have yet another reason to upgrade while not having to get rid of there previous card, and for future generations, it does mean that if your next ATi card isnt quite performing how you want it. Simply bundle in your old one and get a boost.

Nice one, I would karma for the proof but I cant right now, for some reason :\ Bf2s looks fucked up on my screen.

I guess the 3Dmark score don't lie, but I am a bit perplexed.

No, crossfire doesnt work like SLI in that respect.

Yep. You can already use a 3850 and a 3870 in the same rig without 3870s performance dropping.

Hmmmmm, not to rain on the parade, but this doesn't seem 100% legit... Maybe they can be paired up, but that 3DMark06 score looks a bit suspicious. 12k on that is like 20k on stock.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
