it's not certain, but it's very unlikely that a non-carbon based life form could ever arise, only silicon shares the same reactivity, bit it forms complexes far too rigid for any sort of motion (internal or external).

I think that if we ever do find life, it will be carbon based, but it may have followed an entirely different path of evolution than our own, and may not resemble anything from our planet.

there are organisms that use sulfur instead of oxygen living on this planet right now.

it's quite possible that chemosynthetic organisms could have evolved on planets orbiting dimmer stars, where photosynthesis is not useful/possible.  If life is discovered on Europa, it would likely be of the chemosynthetic variety.

I wonder how far a chemosynthetic organism can evolve, however.  Would they be able to achieve mobility and sentient thought, or be rooted to thermal vents like tube worms and bacteria?

How many species use air? how many species use sulfur?

divide sulfur species by the number of total species for a percentage... compare that to the percentage of species that breath oxygen.

Now with these percentages in mind, looking for life do you search for sulfur or oxygen?

We are borne from stars.. all the way down to the calcium in our bones. If you want to see life, go outside at night and look up.

If you are feeling ambitious you can rig something up..  What I'm working on:
