That's right, the Sun. Here's a new article about using solar panels in space and capturing the sun's rays, 13 times more powerful than the rays that hit us each day on the face of the planet. It states how the Sun generates 10 tillion times the energy our entire planet uses, so all we'd need to retreive would be microscopic to power everything. Of course, its in political limbo, as nobody wants to pay for it. I mean, what the fuck?! The costs of the ENTIRE project could be made within a few years of full deployment and then they could give us free energy forever. Really though, how is it ethical to profit off of something that you do not have to produce. Maybe pay a small fee for maintenance and to pay the workers salary at the plants, but the actual company shouldn't charge anything over $.01/kw. Just my opinion.

There is enough energy to power the world in farts too, question is, how do you collect it.

Finding energy isn't hard, retrieving and turning into useful energy is.

1 atom of hydrogen contains enough energy to power the world by the way.

In 2005, the world used on the order of 1020J.  If the entire mass of the hydrogen atom (1 proton + 1 electron) were converted into energy with 100% efficiency, the energy is only ~940 MeV, or ~10-10J.  It could power the world, but only for ~10-23 seconds.

Infinite energy to power the world
But then the population will expand again to suck up the available resources and we will hit another barrier, not enough food, not enough fresh water. There will be 20bn sweating, squabbling humans before we know it.
Then what?

Build power stations to run on stupid people, power and eugenics in one go.

There's just something so cool about a space-based cannon that fires a perfectly straight beam of light, obliterating what it aims at.

There are plenty of 'unlimited' energy sources. Just to name a few.

Geothermal: The earth's core is not going to stop creating heat for the foreseeable future and if it does, energy is going to be low down on our list of concerns. A good replacement for power stations because it produces constant energy 24/7 which many other 'sources' do not.
Wind: Not the most reliable source as wind strength can change, but none the less. Wind or moving air is everywhere and there is lots of energy in it.
Solar: Expensive atm and reliant on the sun. Also only works during the day so is not a particularly good source as a base load supplier.
Solar thermal: Similar problems as above.
Tidal: As long as we have the moon, which doesn't look like leaving us any time soon, we will have fairly reliable tides and the energy in them is huge.
Hydro: Assuming the worlds climate doesn't increase in temperature too much we will continue to have fairly consistent rainfall and melting glaciers to create large enough river systems to build dams and hydroelectric stations. There are many other concerns with other environmental effects of dams that need to be taken into consideration but it has worked well in a number of places in the past.

Other sources which may not be 'unlimited' but are much better then our current energy uses include:
Nuclear: I believe they have discovered a method of bombarding the nuclear waste with neutrons (or is it protons?) to reduce the half life to minutes instead of centuries, and other then the waste there are no negative environmental effects.
Frozen Natural Gas: (Or Methane clathrate/hydrate) One litre of methane clathrate solid contains about 168 litres of methane gas, so is contains much higher density of energy then oil and also burns a lot cleaner. They also estimate that there are larger reserves then there ever was of oil.

That's one of the design flaws of America. It's evident the moment you fly into or over the country - it was designed with the presupposition that the car would remain king forever. I think the US needs to have a public transport and urban planning epiphany.

Thank you. It sometimes takes visiting this place for outsiders to realize our predicament. If you want some level of amusement, investigate Washington State's fascination with throwing up overpriced and underused rail systems. Makes me wish we would've just kept our old rail infrastructure...but no, it's all been paved over and built on.

Epiphany or no, the car isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Hopefully, engines that smell like rhino ass eventually will.

Why hasn't Ireland started selling its perpetual motion device that was the solution to the energy problem.  Hell, they had it a couple years ago as I recall.

I think the Irish are addicted to oil and making the world suffer.

You have a source for that neutron/proton bombarding thing? If it's viable (i.e. doesn't require something like the CERN particle accelerator to work lol) then it sounds fantastic, and a better option (in the relatively short term at least) than this satellite idea (although I like the theory of the solar satellites too).

If he's referring to Orbo, it's being opened up to electronics manufacturers to see how they can intergrate it with current electrical products once it's been validated, some limited details are on the Steorn site.

breeder reactors i believe

no, you bombard u238 with neutrons and it will create new isotopes and such, that can be used again in the reactor to generate more energy before it has to be thrown away

Yes, breeder reactors.  You can alter the fuel cycle to eliminate much of the dangerous long-lived waste by using it as more fuel.

You have said this before, and it just isn't true.  There is more than one type of nuclear fuel.

India has vast reserves of Thorium, which can be used as nuclear fuel (some estimates say they have enough to last for 1000's of years).  Breeder reactors can convert the vast amounts of U-238 into Pu-239, etc...

It's called the search feature.  I know the author and a keyword-- 'nuclear'.  I also have a good memory.  I don't hold a grudge, but when he said it this time I remembered that he had said it before.  And back then, I asked about it and never got a response.
