This has happened where my parents live.  In Buffalo, NY there is a theater that always seems to get overrun with low-lives on Christmas Day (it's happened twice now if I remember correctly).  Last year, it spilled over to a McDonald's across the street and ended in a shooting.

I hate going to that theater because it always has at least 4 armed guards during the day and even more at night.  Why would I want to see a movie in that kind of environment?

people are more reluctant to commit crimes when they know somebody might be carrying. the downside, of course, is that gun crime goes up, as do murders per capita. but lets face it, as "common" as murders are in america, how many people actually know somebody who even knows somebody who was murdered? i don't, thats for sure.

what was the murder rate in england before guns were banned? and what is it now?

but lets not dissolve into that argument because it leads nowhere.

I live in Rochester now.  I have never been panhandled so much as when I go into the city here.  I went to the University of Rochester, and it was a regular occurrence for cars to go missing.  Some guy stole a master set of keys to the student union and managed to cart out a big flat screen TV and several computers without being questioned.

The city has gone way downhill.  I'm sure that the poor state of the economy here has a lot to do with it.

Tbh, I think the main encouragement is lack of proper punishment for those caught, half the time its just a warning

I'm not sure about guns, cos legalising them makes them a lot easier for the wrong people to get hold of them. Plus the law hear sometimes protects the ones breaking it more than the victims

There are many causes, the bottom line is low lifes know they will get away with anything short of murder.
Anything else
- They probably won't get caught
- Even if they do they won't get much of a punishment

Why not live on the dole and make your life more pleasant by stealing stuff others have worked hard for?
Or just screw it all and have a comfortable living dealing drugs?

My old area's fucked, we moved a little bit further out now. Even then, there's still a few twats here and there. We only go to proper places in Central more or less these days, less dickheads actually in the main bits.

London isn't bad if you know where to go. I think, It's getting a little better than it was a year or two ago, well that's just from my Experience, maybe it's because we've started going to more classy places around Central rather than local haunts that are full of fucking kids. Probably for you, coming from Bath, you're gonna think "fuck sake" - I can understand that.

Don't get me started on how most kids these days are fucked up, that's just something else. Don't get me started on Somalians either, oh lawd...

Hehe - ironically I'm staying in England for university (either Kings or City) precisely because I love London. Just as long as you know which areas to avoid, you're usually fine. The worst thing I have experienced thus far is having a train canceled because someone got stabbed on it (they were both chavs - the stabbed and the stabber)
I live in Oxshott though, right now, so it's safe to say I live a pretty sheltered life.

Yeah coming back from Bath made me think how shitty some of London is.
TBH, I'm not sure if its gotten any better, but don't know if its gotten any worse either. Maybe its just that I'm at the age where I'm more likely to experience it

Decent places for nights out are usually central n upper street in Islington, if you dont look for trouble you usually dont get any, but I seem to see a lot more going on. Like we get chavs in Bath, but barely in the large groups we get here.

I just think they feel they can get away with almost anything, and they're usually right

People are more reluctant to feel safe in their communities when they know somebody might be carrying, too. Even if the statistics spoke for it, I wouldn't like having guns in my neighbourhood. Murder rates and gun crime going up as well as feeling unsafe in my neighbourhood, that's something I really wouldn't like. In the end, it all comes down to whether or not you'd carry in a situation like that, and that decision sways your view on it.

An armed society is a fantasy for some, and a nightmare for others, regardless of statistics. No point in arguing that, I fully agree.
