I was at the supermarket today and it's fucking amazing how expensive food is these days. A jug of skim milk from who knows what sources is like 3 bucks... but a carton of organic skim is 5 bucks. I don't know just how much better organic may be, but I say the less chemicals and antibiotics the better. Same with fish... it's ridiculous how expensive it is.

$230 to restock the fridge. This is with healthier items: fish, vegetables, chicken, whole grain bread (real bread, not that stuff with HFCS in it), nuts, eggs. We aren't even a huge family, and I'm the only one that eats a bit more than normal (inb4fatass... can't build muscle if ya eat like a supermodel). I feel sorry (well, sort of... they're called contraceptives) for families with like 4 young kids that have to eat all day.

Who else is getting sick of these high prices?

Haha I remember when I was growing up my mom would spend around $1000 every two weeks at Costco.  That's what happens when you are Catholic and don't "believe" in birth control.  6 kids, all wanting food at all times of the day.

I usually go to Whole Foods and/or Trader Joes, and the stuff there is more expensive, but it tastes sooooo much better than shit with preservatives and hormones.  I usually only buy a few day's worth of groceries though, so it doesn't get over around $60 often.

The problem is that we subsidize normal farming but not organic.  Organic farming will always be more expensive, but the difference between its costs and normal farming would be greatly reduced if we didn't subsidize ANY farming.

Agriculture should be totally free of subsidies.

$400/mo at the grocery, but we eat out a lot. Quickly it's becoming cheaper to just eat out than shop for food.

Trader Joes is awesome. We always shop there whenever we are near one. I love those little jelly fruit candy things, you should know the ones.

Yeah, those are great, my roomate always gets 'em.  I love the salsa verde burritos that you put in the microwave.  If you haven't tried them, do it.

I try to buy most things at Sam's Club or the local farmer's market.  I can get the boxed/canned stuff in bulk real cheap and then fresh produce directly from the farmers for less than the grocery store.

When I do go to the grocery store, it does get depressing seeing the price of bread, milk, etc... go up because of the cost of fuel.

Farmer's markets are the best.  There are so many fresh produce stands out on corners and set up in small strip malls here.  The best place to get cherries, strawberries, and especially corn.  I went to the fishmarket down by Newport Beach last week and the fresh fish was almost always cheaper down there then it is at the supermarket

$2.00 for a can of soda is a rip-off but whatever. Like I said in the other thread, I don't drink 10 cans a day.

Ken, we went to Giant (general supermarket) where we got the bulk of the food and it was $150. Then we went to Whole Foods for some fish and rice and it cost about $100.

Yeah, our house (family of 5) normally spends about £80-£90 (~$170) on food per week. Petrol, on the other hand is a lot more.

Can someone explain why as the price of fuel goes up, how it effects the price of food? I dont understand this.

Shipping. Unless you buy a lot of local stuff, food's gonna cost more because it gets shipped from all over. It's no surprise that Alaskan salmon is more expensive than Atlantic salmon (at least here on the East Coast).

Since shipping requires fuel... the prices go up.

Alaskan Salmon is more expensive because it is better.

My friend is a Commercial Salmon Fisherman in Alaska, he would kill me if I didn't say that.

I got a pay rise of 3.8%.

But yeah, it costs more at supermarkets because they have more overheads than farmers at a market.

The average piece of food travels something like 5000 miles before it reaches its final destination.

At Tesco each week we only spend about £100-150. Not alot, and there are 4 humans and 2 cats the look after. Albeit the cats cost like a fiver a month but, every penny counts

Fish is so expensive because many popular fish are endangered now, such as cod, haddock i believe, um tuna maybe. All sorts.

I spend about 150-200 $ a week on myself for food and drinks. I don't really notice an increase in prices. Milk is an exception, that has doubled in the last months, but spending 2 or 4$ won't really make a difference

If I just ate from the supermarket I'd spend NZD40-50 (USD30-38) per week to eat fairly well, but theres not always time/motivation to make nice food, so takeaways/eating out are often the way. 8-15 per meal (6-13) depending on where I go/what I get.  Shopping around can lower the bill a fair bit, there are two big supermarkets on the way home from work so I tend to buy stuff on special from either, and if I want to save more I can go out of my way to other "market" type places - just sell food etc, but at lower prices.
