Yeah, so my dad is looking for a laptop. He's had a Dell for a while, and he's fucking sick of how slow it is, so he's looking for something fast. No fancy GPU's though, as he uses it for Word, excel, Office, etc, but it should be fast at that (lol - loading times, boot times, etc). It also has to be pretty light, not some huge ass motherfucker.

I would go for a Sony, but they don't make them with Norwegian Keyboards.

Also, there is no budget - go crazy (the office pays )

Lenovo = IBM Thinkpad?

Guys, no budget doesn't mean go overboard... Like I said, he's only using it for word, excel, outlook - the only spec that's important is loading times and boot time.

So the video card doesn't really matter? Gimme a sec.

Use that for vantage obviously so you can find it as you can't use newegg.

Big HDD, 4 gigs of memory, blu-ray drive...pretty good.

ok, look:

Imagine you were testing out all the laptops in the world. The test includes:

booting
word
excel
outlook
load times for programs

at what point would you stop noticing the difference? There is your budget.

@Poseidon: All the big companies do, other than Sony.

4200 rpm hard drive

My dad has run the whole gamut of mid to higher range laptops, and he said the only ones that have really lasted were from hp. The screens went out on most of the others.

For what you're looking for, go for at least 2 gb of RAM, if you can get more, Vista to stay on the current apps for the business world (latest office and such), 7200 rpm hard drive, then as fast of a processor/screen as you want to pay for.

edit: oh, and make sure they don't have really shitty slow RAM in there, you aren't going to find blazing fast stuff in a laptop, just make sure it isn't shit.

edit2: that ASUS one still only has a 5400 rpm drive, that is more standard for laptops but you can definitely find 7200 rpm drives
That has a pretty small screen as well, 12.1"

Battery life is another important aspect to look at.

Yeah I just noticed that now. He can't use a Sony anyways, so no worries. The one I posted (The ASUS Lambo) has a 5400 RPM HDD...still not that fast, but will do good.

Is battery life, screen size, and portability (is that a word? brain fart) important to your dad?

Lenovo Thinkpad or something from the X series (Lenovo) was my first thought as I read the OP. The Thinkpad Keyboard is argueably one of the best notebook keyboards ever made (supposedly) and they're built pretty tough. Your dad might want to look into SSDs if there's no budget, although capacity might be lacking.

IF you're looking at "ultraportables" the Lenovo X300 might be another choice. The HP Voodoo Envy 133, although pricey, is turning heads too. Decent capabilities for a small system, looks nice (although the logo does not look like anything you'd expect to find on a business notebook).

IBM/Lenovo thinkpad X or T series. They are superb. If you can't get one with a 7200RPM drive, buy a separate one and connect that instead.
