Need help with setting up a shared printer.

I made the stupid mistake of trying to set up a shard printer while using computers with XP and Vista. Suffice to say, things went badly, and now I have no idea of what I've done or how to undo what I did.

I have a desktop with XP and is connected by cable to router/modem.
I have two laptops with Vista connected to router/modem via wireless.
I connected the printer adapter server thingy to the router/modem.
I tried printing (obviously it didn't work, there being no more direct connection)
I went to "Network" and added printer on a laptop.
Sent test page, printed.
Did same with other laptop, also printed.

Looked at XP desktop, tried to "add printer" connected locally (my reasoning is that it's connected via cord to router, so it should be fine).
Nothing appears on browse list.

I have no idea how to get get the XP desktop to connect to the shared printer which is connected to the router now.

Does anyone know how to do this?

No it's not connected locally, it's a network printer. Try connecting it as a network printer.

EDIT: I know it's connected by a cord (via a couple if network devices), but for a printer to count as being 'local', it has to be connected to the PC via a printer cable.

Go Control Panel > Printers and faxes > Add a printer (on the left).

Then go throught the wizard selecting network printer and then the middle radio button and copy the full name of the printer (\\server_name\printer_name) from one of your laptops. (You can find the server/name in the properties, but I don't have Vista so I don't know how.)

One thing you may have to do is install the driver for the XP machine. This means plugging the printer into it temporarily so the setup can complete (they're convenient that way ). Once they know what the printer is, they should have no trouble connecting to it once they see it on the network.

Did you try typing in the \\server\name?

I can never get them to come up in the browse bit.

The problem is that I'm not sure what the server or name of printer are.

I think the network's name is the default "NETGEAR" and I'm assuming that the printer is "HP Color LaserJet 3550" but this doesn't work.

Can you open the printer properties for that printer on one of your laptops? It should tell you the exact \\server\printer there (but as I said I don't have Vista so I can't tell you how). Then just copy it into the box on your XP machine.

you should be able to print a network config page directly from the printer... this will tell you things like the ip address and host name, which will basically solve your problem.

That's actually really hard to find.
