There are several theories about time travel. One is that there are an infinite number of alternate universes, and when you travel back in time, you are actually traveling to a nearly identical universe back in time, so that anything you change will only effect that universe. This prevents your actions from affecting your traveling back in time in the first place, making it impossible to stop your former self from time traveling.
