SO whats the best SINGLE core graphics card right now?

So im definately getting a new graphics card this weekend.

Im wanting a single card only so i dont want the 48 x2 or gx2..

I just cant make my mid up as to which is best for the money, im ruling out the 280 gtx as it costs way to much for what its worth...

Why would you discount the 4870X2? You (or indeed anyone) do not know what it will be like. They have apparantly worked on the micro suttering issue, and many other of the issues assoiated with dual GPU cards (I read stuff about shared memory which is a big plus for one). The reason it isnt out yet is because there hammering the drivers so upon release it actually behaves, quote, ''Like a single core card''.

However, if you have to just stick to a single core it's a 4870 every day of the week.

The memory on the ATi card is running faster (effectivly) so in this instance less is more. The ATi card has a bigger bandwith than the GTX 260 which is the important figure (or atleast one of them), it's the bandwith that allows you to crank the rez and AA more so than the memory. Though the memory is imporant, unlike many who dunno what there talking about, 512 is a standard I think that will remain with us for some time yet.

You cant just look at 896Mb and say well that is > 512. Mathmatically fine, but since when was hardware as linear as that, you have to account for GDDR5. Look at the bandwiths.

The price difference between the 4870 and 260 is quite alot, if that doesn't concern you, clearly buying a GTX 280 won't either. And the 280 is the most powerful card out there atm.

Unfortunately techsite reviews don't always equate to what one can expect on their own system. I've seen a number of reviews from users that say the actual performance of a 4850 is = 8800gt.

I stepped up to a 9800GX2 when it was released and it ran like crap on my system. I got better performance with my 8800gts than I did with that GX2 card.

I personally won't ever go that route again.
