I had a G5 once.

Then I got a G9.

I gave the 5 to the Salvation Army.

I'm still using the keyboard that came with my 5 year old eMachines computer and an Mx310 that I took from Dell. These suit me absolutely fine and have been working since.

I have a G15, got it with money I guess I didn't have the willpower to not spend, but either way I'm content with a 20-30 dollar KB as long as it has basic media keys and preferably a few shortcut keys for firefox and winamp. I think as far as gaming, the best thing to look for in a keyboard is it's construction, both that it won't fall apart and can be easily disassembled and cleaned. Logitech and Microsoft both have good offerings for these, usually "... Media Keyboard" works well.

As far as a mouse, crucial for gaming. Primarily comfort, which is why the MX518-G5 series of mouses bests everything out there, and DPI. Any mouse that earns the title does, or can do if adjustable, 2000 DPI. DPI practically means precision and precise movements are handy when it comes to aiming. There's only a few you can look at here, I am of course bias to the G5 but Razer has gaming mouses as well as Microsoft. By the way, G5. If you're going to get a gaming mouse, get a good mousepad. A funcpad is good, I use the 1030 but their others are the same.

As far as speakers, scrap the idea if it's gaming you're in to. You'll want headphones. Yeah, blah blah surround sound speakers are awesome. I know they are, I've used them, they're the shit for music, movies, and everything else a nice $150 2.1 setup is. But for games, nothing beats a good set of headphones which can be had for.. say $50. If you're not too worried about competitive play, I use a 2.1 setup by Klipsch called "Promedia 2.1." Wonderful name of course, but they sound great and you won't have to worry about pain from wearing headphones for hours. As many have mentioned, they end up listening to music while they play and it's much more enjoyable with speakers (..subwoofer) then headphones.

That's why.

Hmm can only do so much as to offer my $0.02 here, so:

Keyboards are the least 'essential' out of the 'expensive' peripherals, in my opinion. All modern keyboards have good response time and nice key 'play' (as in the movement and return of each key is fast and satisfactory), so basically the bonuses that you're paying for are media-keys / macro-keys and fancy LED's and other bling. Personally I only bought a G15 because I had money spare and my old keyboard was getting worn out, but I was happy with a mid-range Saitek keyboard for years. Could do without the media and macro keys, and the LED's I guess at least had some actual functionality with all the nocturnal hours of gaming I was doing.

The mouse is the crucial part. I'm a little hesistant to say you get what you pay for, but there certainly is a 'standard' that you should seek to buy into as far as Logitech/Razer mice go. Standard office mice or Microsoft mice do not compete to the Logitech/Razer mice, and I highly recommend one. Bear in mine that mouse surfaces are also decisive. I spent $30.00 on what I thought at the time was an extortionately priced S&S Steelpad surface... my, I was proven wrong. The glide and optical performance really is far better with a decent mouse-mat. I'd personally recommend a Logitech G5 as I've always been a little too weary of the implications of wireless (i.e. batteries running out, mouse is heavier etc.) to go for that. But it's user-preference. What is for sure is that the extra buttons/shortcuts and the improved optical/laser quality will refine your accuracy, and the Teflon underpads will make your entire gaming experience smoother. Also, just as an aside: don't buy into this DPI competition. Razer are 'upping' Logitech with a mouse with 200 more DPI ra-ra-ra... DPI is just a hardware-industry buzzword for sensitivity, it's all a bit of a fad. Sure, they make the laser optics inside each mouse have higher and higher DPI- but at the end of the day you can afford to go for a mouse that suits your 'holding style' and need for buttons over a mouse with 200 more DPI, because Windows configuration and in-game mouse sensitivity can simulate and achieve the exact same 'feel' as the most high-calibre of DPI mice.

People seem to be divided on speakers. I for one an am absolute audiophile and couldn't be without my big sub and my 5.1 / Creative set-up. It's not hi-fi quality obviously, but then again the average MP3 / FLAC file and/or in-game audio doesn't push things to that level anyway. You really do get what you pay for here; if you chose to buy a 5.1 set-up, do not budget and aim for the bargain offers... they will simply not deliver in quality of sound, timbre, bass etc. 5.1 can make or break your gaming/music experience in certain situations I find. I listened to music on 2.1 for years, and really got adjusted to the great sound of two satellite speakers with a decent subwoofer. When I upgraded to a 5.1 system (I opted for Logitech Z-5500's, and I highly recommend them) I at first found the sound far too alien and different. A week later of tinkering and EQ / software settings and I was literally blown away by THX and Dolby effects in games and DVD's, and music was all the more immersive. My best buying tip for a computer sound system is to balance your budget between speaker periphery and sound-card hardware, i.e. do not buy the greatest set of hi-fi speakers in the world and run them on a 2.1 Audigy sound-card. I run a Creative X-Fi series card (doesn't really matter what model; they all share the same base stats, all gimmicks and 'onboard RAM! Pro gamer!!!' fads aside)- and they're a solid, reliable card that you can't go wrong with. Of course better alternatives exist... but I wouldn't really recommend them unless you're a serious audiophile or a music producer, or something of the sort.

Well, this turned into something more like my $20.00, rather than my $0.02, but I hope it's helpful/insightful all the same- if you bothered to read it .

I agree fully, aside from the mousepad area.  I do own a MX518(twoactually) and my 8 year old CompUSA pad works great, never have problems with tracking or the like, but in that area, I hink it would be more personal preference.  I for one cant justify spending more then $10 on a mousepad, most of mine were free so

One thing you didn't mention was the comfort factor.  i find my MX518 to easily be the most comfortabl mouse Ive used, and Ive used alot, Dells, Microsofts, Apples, etc, and none of them feel as good as this one.

DPI in my opinion however is a scam to sell mice.  my MX518 can easily hit 1800 Dpi, but at that setting its very twitchy and jumpy.  Yeah, sure you can get used to it, and learn to love it, but 800 Dpi does me fine for 99% of my gaming uses.  Only time I crank it to 1800 is in tanks to rotate my turret around faster.  Other then that, never use it.  The side buttons are another thing though   Never thought Id find a use, but oh do they come in handy.

It comes down to trying it. If you can, find a friend who has one or go to a store that sells them and try a good gaming mousepad. You may not make much use of the difference (which should be obvious to you), you may be content with what you have, but there gets a point where it does make a difference in game performance.

As far as comfort, like I've said that has gone through to the G5. Why logitech ditched it in the G9 god knows, I probably would've bought it for the new engine if they kept the ergonomics.

And DPI, do not confuse it with speed. It's like DPI in printing versus the size of the image. Increase your DPI, decrease in game sensitivity and you get the same speed of motion with more precise movements and less jumping then you even had previously.

I didn't have time to use all the features. But, tbh, the speakers are sooooooooooooooo much worth it compared to the keyboard and mouse. Far too many buttons on both of them.
