The ATI card is 100$ cheaper than the 260. I think there is no logical way to defend nvidia anymore.

The 4870s sold out within a couple hours yesterday.

I find it ridiculous that nvidia has not dropped the prices of their GTX 260 to match that of the 4870. But there will be those that purchase it out of sheer ignorance.

Well because the GTX is more expensive, that can only mean that it is the better part!

The 2 cards have shown in the reviews I have read to be almost exactly the same performance-wise

Oh shit.  I didn't even know they'd be out for retail so early.  All the better, hopefully at the end of July they'll be back in stock with....perhaps a price cut?

The 4870 should, as GDDR5 stock becomes less of an issue (it's inflating the price at the moment).

GTX 260 pretty much cant go down (nor the 280).  Not only are the Nvidia cards a lot more expensive to make in the first place, they have a higher failure rate (the cores), so the ones that do pass the test so to speak, need to re-coup the loss made on the failure cores.  Less Nvidia take a loss the GTX 260 and 280 arent going to go down much (if atall), as things stand.

I wonder why all of the 4870s are sold out, but none of the GTX 260s are
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I wonder how 260GTX, 280GTX, 4850 and 4870 compete against each other this evening... got the two Nvidias yesterday and the two ATIĀ“s this morning...

I said HD4870 will be released at the end of June/beginning of July and no one believed me or was skeptic.
