I can't delete icons without deleting the actual files. On XP most if not all of the icons on my desktop were shortcuts. On Vista it doesn't seem to be the case.

I have resorted to making a simple desktop folder and putting everything in there, but tell me, BF2s, is there an easier way?

Help is greatly appreciated.

So when you delete a shortcut, it actually deletes two files at once, both the shortcut AND the actual file?  I've never heard that one before.  It might be some obscure setting that somehow got turned on.

Are you sure that your icons are shortcuts and not the actual file?

Sorry but I don't believe that Vista would delete a shortcut and its target at the same time like that

That's the thing, they are actual files on the desktop, when I install something I ask it to install to it default location, but it puts it on the desktop aswell. Not shortcuts. So when I delete them I'm deleting the whole file.

So let's say you install a game.  It puts the actual game folder, with all the textures, audio, .dll's, etc., on your desktop AND in your program files?  Or only on the desktop?

Next time you install something, manually type in the install directory.

C:\Program Files\Whatever

Then you can create your own shortcut by right clicking on the exe in C:\Program Files\Whatever and clicking "Create Shortcut".  Then drag the shortcut onto your desktop.  If you do that and it still installs the program in two locations, your Vista must be possessed.
