Italy fingerprint plan criticised

Italy's interior minister has sparked criticism with a proposal that would see police fingerprinting all members of the Roma community living in camps.
Roberto Maroni, of the anti-immigrant Northern League, said the move would guarantee that those with the right to stay could live in decent conditions. Those without that right, including children, would be sent home, he said. The UN Children's Fund (Unicef) has criticised the proposal, as have opposition MPs.

The head of Unicef Italy, Vincenzo Spadafora, said his organisation was "stunned and deeply concerned" by the proposal. "We'd like to suggest to him (Mr Maroni) that to respect all children's right to equality he should record all Italian children in the same way," said Mr Spadafora.

Would you be for or against this kind of Governmental policy? Discuss.

Eactly!

I would say "end thread" but I want to see if any of the 'war on terror' fan club attempt to defend such a thing.

To be fair, they'd be a very difficult community to police.

That is true, in Ireland the traveling community are just pretty much left to police themselves. Ever seen the film Snatch?

But finger printing people, including babies?...that's guilty until proven innocent. Either everyone should get it or no one at all.

How very progressive of the Italian government.

Only the end.  Brilliant.

Is recording addresses guilty until proven innocent?  It's ultimately a matter of how far you want to go.  Certainly, purely doing it to Roma Gypsies is an issue but if the plan were ultimately to do it to all those who don't remain at a set address for more than a month (for example), that might be different.  Not that I support the plan, but there's some logic to it.

Also, don't some European countries operate on a guilty until proven innocent system?

Singling out one community for the plan is where the real issue lies...I believe a chap called Hitler did something similar not that long ago.

I personally don't like the idea of such invasive forms of Government, I'm a bit of an individualist at heart. The pros of such a plan are matched by the cons of it being corruptible by those who wield the power. Didn't Cunnilingus Rice get in bother after her office were found to be unlawfully exploiting intel to keep tabs on Barrack Obama? It's all a bit Minority Report-esque for my liking.

Actually, no.  He also targetted gypsies, blacks, disabled people and political opponents.  But apparently they aren't important enough to get a mention.

And I'd agree with you.  I'm just pointing out that it's just a harsher form of what we do now.

Does Italy have its head on straight? First legalizing the right to lie about infidelity to protect one's honor, then this? FFS.
