I'm buying a new computer and I need some good advice.  I am trying to buy a gaming laptop on a budget, it's retarded but both my laptop and desktop died on me recently.  The desktop was kind of a piece of junk because it was so old, and the laptop was new, but decided to fry.  Anyways, I have boiled it down between two computers, although I would be more than open to any suggestions people have.

Alienware.

Both my other computers were alienware, so I am hesitant to get yet another one, but no one does it better for gaming lap-tops (aside from customs).  There is one that is relatively cheap, $1,700.

There is another one from Gateway that is about the same price.  It has a longer warranty, and overall better hardware.  3 gigs of memory as opposed to Alienwares 1 gig.  Also, a 2.0 GHz processor as opposed to Alienware's 1.66.  Also, a marginally better video card.  Both Comps come with VISTA.

Now, I don't know a whole lot about  comps...in fact, not much at all, so I'm not really sure how to compare these things.  It would piss me off to get a gateway only to have it overheat constantly or something like that.

I am inclined to go with the Gateway, but has anything heard anything about them to steer me away from them and back to Alienware, or is there another that someone would suggest?

You talking about the gateway fx series?  With the phenom quad cores?  A buddy of mine has one and loves it, despite some reviews that scared him a bit.

That's the one.  Hmm, that's good to know that he likes it.  And yeah, Mitch my bad, been awhile since I've been on bf2s.  I don't think I can move the thread but if a Mod would I would appreciate it.

That's just it.  I'm looking for a somewhat cheaper computer, I know that cheap and gaming laptops do not go hand in hand, but I'd like to see what I could get for $1,600 or so dollars.

What I'd really like to know is if anyone had heard any good or bad things about Gateway

I know I was just challenging your "no one does it better" remark .

I have a (somewhat) similar laptop to the one in your OP. I paid less than 1,600.

I would recommend a larger battery though.

Costco has some good prices.

Wow... such a helpful post..... (at least I spelled it right )

Anyway, if the gateway has a longer warranty and better (faster) parts, then I say go for it.
If you find out that it overheats, well, just visit the ghetto-mod thread, they might have some ideas for you

Ohhhh, I wasn't just messing around, pointing to the fact that occasionally when people say help, it sounds like halp.  Thank you sir, for the helpful tips about the pros and cons of gateway gaming laptops.  Your post was very halpful and constructive.  Now please halp yourself to a face full of blender.

There, now thats above me:

Build your own. The internet has hundreds of guides. Just read up and make sure the CPU paste and stuff goes on the right side.

I have the gateway, well this version

Its pretty awesome, the thing looks awesome, and runs cooler then my old PC (GPU never tops 60). In terms of FPS in games, I have not been disapointed. With shadows off (everything else maxed) it gets constantly over 70 fps, even on a full 42 man dm. Let me know if you want any other benchmark type stuff for the laptop.

Yes, but is it worth the time and money? No.
