Buying Vista Ultimate (Flamers GTFO)

I've decided to get Vista Ultimate since I have a *cough* copy of XP *cough*. My reasoning is the release of Dx 10 games and the RAM capacity. I realize XP 64 bit would allow me to use more than 4 gigs of RAM but it doesn't give me the benefit of Dx 10.

Is there anything I should know before buying this? Do I need to upgrade? What's the ideal amount of RAM to have?

My specs:

M2N-SLI Deluxe Mobo
AMD Athlon 64 FX-62 Dual Core Processor ~2.8GHz
2GB of 800MHz Corsair Dual Channel RAM
Nvidia 7950GT (current card)

I'm thinking of buying the 4850 and a couple of 2GB sticks of RAM.

x64 and ur all set.
Also if you do want those DX10 Gamean then get the 4850, you won't be able to get DX10 on a 7 series card.

I've got an 'evaluation' install of Vista32 on my AthlonXP 3200+ with 2GB ram and an AGP X800XT PE.
It runs very nicely, boots quicker and appears to use ram much more efficiently than XP, and even handles all the funky doodads such as Aero.
So, I would expect your 2GB will be at least adequate.

The ideal amount of ram to have is just a little more than your ever going to need to use - the problem is there's no way of putting a figure on this.

I would get Vista first, install it and see how it feels - if you find it starts getting sluggish and the HDD indicator LED on you case keeps on flashing, then grab another 2GB.

AS for the 4850 - get one, get one now!

I kinda feel like waiting a couple weeks. The 4870 just came out so I'm guessing the price of the 4850 is gonna drop pretty damn soon.

I actually have the same RAM, it think.
There are no slowdowns, It uses about 900mb at all times, I can ALT+TAB Between TF2 and my desktop with no slowdowns.

I use Vista 32bit with 4GBs of RAM on a Quad Core 6600. Works very smoothly. I would highly recommend 4 GB if your considering Vista since it runs much better regardless of 32 or 64 bit

Get 4gb, no doubt. I have Vista Home Premium x64 with 2 gigs of DDR2-800 and it's...well, it's bareable, but it can get slow.

And get a 4870.

Should I consider Vista Home Premium instead then? Is there much of a difference between Ultimate and Home Premium other than price? (I wouldn't mind saving a few dollars)

Thanks for the chart. I'd rather buy from PC Cyber. Tiger Direct's got stupid shipping prices and it's more expensive. I can pick it up from PC Cyber instead of paying for shipping. The store's only 15 minutes from my house (even though it'd probably cost the difference in gas to get there).

The 2 main differences to a home user are the Advanced Backup and BitLocker

One of which (Advanced Backup) is a bit better than the standard backup tool - main extra thing is ability to create a backup of the entire HDD, not just data files - so if you HDD dies, you just buy a new one and restore - no need to reinstall Vista and all drivers and apps.

But the other (BitLocker) you probably won't be able to use any way (it requires supporting hardware and is mainly intended for business laptop users).

So, the question comes down to, do you mind sometimes having to reinstall everything?

yeah home premium would be just right for you. I run home premium x64 and love it. I would definitely recommend $ gigs for sure, while running some games I have topped 2 gig of usage and page file sucks.

I wish I would have gone with ultimate now though because I've setup a home server with a domain and can't log on to the domain from home premium, that is the only thing I don't like about it. (but that's my fault)

:S My 2GB runs everything I do fine ... Photoshop can be a tad slow sometimes at loading but that's about it. I'd say wait a few weeks before getting a graphics card - there could be some interesting prices in the very near future.

XP x64 tbh, better than vista x64 in every way (except for unnecesary features that slow down your computer) and much higher FPS in games.

And about DX10, the amount of FPS you sacrifice for that little bit of eyecandy is not just worth it.
