After delays, delays, and rumors of more delays, the era of Windows XP has finally reached its final hours. Microsoft has made it official: Monday, June 30 will be the last day Microsoft sells XP to the masses. In fact, some companies have already stopped offering XP as an option on new machines as they prep for the switchover.

Earlier rumors that Microsoft might extend the sales date have proven untrue, as Microsoft has reiterated that, indeed, June 30 will be the final sales date cut-off for the product. That's it. It's a Vista world now.

Loopholes will remain for some PC makers for some months to come, namely those who are building ultra-low-cost computers that aren't powerful enough for Vista. (Though some machines in this class, like HP's Mini-Note, actually come with Vista anyway.) For at least the rest of the year, downgrades remain an option for many PC purchasers too, though you'll have to jump through some hoops, and possibly pay extra, in order to get XP.

As I've written several times (and reassured many of you in email responses), XP fans needn't panic about the loss of XP. Even if you don't have a copy on hand, the product will be available through many channels for years to come (and likely forever), through both retail outlets and the aftermarket. As I type this, nearly 1,000 copies of XP are on sale on eBay, where they usually sell for less than $100.

In other news, Microsoft has recently pledged to keep supporting XP, including the release of security updates, all the way through 2014. So XP users needn't fret that you'll suddenly be victimized by hackers due to unpatched security flaws. Updates should work exactly as you're used to them currently through the Windows Update system.

Thank you XP! I'll probably still be using it for the next 5 years (at least).

I get the same FPS on XP 32-bit and Vista 64-bit.  What Richard said is basically true.  I run all games fine on Vista x64.

He didn't say he runs all games fine, he said he gets better FPS on Vista. Now that may be true but when I had Vista installed I got a lot better FPS on XP than Vista.

I get slighty better FPS in Vista than in XP. The 3frame render-ahead limitation in dx9 can really hurt performance under SLI

They should still put XP on lower end machines, Vista with anything 2GB RAM and over.

64bit for 2GB and over, not necessarily Vista in general.

Nothing wrong with Vista ... I get it all free ... my system can easily handle it ...  no compelling reason yet to switch it all up .. nothing technically compelling or advantageous about vista (except 64bit since 64bit xp is meh)  ... Same old argument.

Richards correct in the fact the all stuff runs just as well ... not sure about the performance boost form it though.

Support goes on to 2014, that's all I care about.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

They were going to, people were waiting for it. The 30th is the day it actually happens.

Good luck with that. Bidding is going to go down and keep going down. There are enough copies of it through many different channels to more than cover the demand for XP.

it's all about having new decent hardware (why wouldnt you if your using a new OS....) I've never had an issue like some have. People rag on Vista a lot and claim to have issues I have never seen and I do things beyond what the average gamer would.

When i had vista on this same computer for about a week i could do absolutely nothing.  Even as admin, couldnt play anything from steam, and BF2 took 3 times as long to load and was nearly unplayable.

Microsoft is on the decline. Hopefully by 2014 all new games will be on Linux.

lol it's hard enough emulating gfx drivers on a linux machine, let alone working out directX10 for XP. If directX doesn't support Xp then unfortunately it's going to die pretty soon. Well before 2014, guaranteed.

"Microsoft sells XP to the masses"

This has already been discussed - computer companies like DELL and HP will continue to sell XP on their machine as an "upgrade" on Operating Systems that were previously offering Windows Vista Business. So even though Microsoft officially are stopping, other companies will continue to sell it.

Yes, OEMs will still be sold while retail sales of XP will discontinue.
